Alex Morgan’s most memorable moments: USWNT legend's career will inspire generations to come

One of the greatest women’s soccer players ever, Alex Morgan delivered many memorable moments

On Thursday, one of the all-time greats in women’s soccer announced her retirement, with Alex Morgan set to bring her 14-year professional career to a close this weekend.

She walks away having made 223 international appearances for the U.S. women’s national team, scoring 123 goals – good for fifth all-time. With two World Cups, an Olympic gold medal, NWSL championship and UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy in her cabinet, there are few players with more accolades than Morgan.

Upon making her national team debut, she did so in the shadow of players such as Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach. She leaves her USWNT career having left her own legacy, one that will inspire generations to come.

On top of her illustrious career, Morgan has also made an undeniable impact off of the field. She was one of the key players in the USWNT’s fight for equal pay. It culminated in a victory in 2022, with a settlement and CBA leading to equal compensation structures for both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams.

In 2021, she was a key name behind reports that former head coach Paul Riley had allegedly sexually coerced former players. She spoke out in support of former teammates Sinead Farrelly and Mana Shim, using her platform to highlight those who reportedly ignored the concerns raised by the players. What followed was a league wide reckoning with abuse. An investigation commissioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2022 and led by former deputy attorney general Sally Yates exposed issues within the NWSL regarding accountability, player safety, and a system that failed to address player complaints.

In 2022, the NWSL and its players association announced its first Collective Bargaining Agreement, which has since been re-negotiated in a landmark announcement in August.

After such an incredible career it’s hard to point out Morgan’s most memorable moments, INDIVISA highlights 10 of them.

  • 10Snowy Debut

It’s hard to believe, but Morgan was once nicknamed “Baby Horse” by other players on the USWNT. But like others, she also once was a rookie, making her debut in a memorable snowy game in Sandy, Utah in 2010.

    9First USWNT goal

Shortly after making her debut, Morgan scored her first goal in a 1-1 tie against China PR. She would go on to score against 32 different countries while becoming one of the most accomplished goal scorers in USWNT history.

  • 8Sending USWNT to the 2011 World Cup

The USWNT was in danger of missing out on the 2011 World Cup on a cold night in Italy in 2010. A loss against Italy in that game could have changed the trajectory of the program entirely, but Morgan wasn’t about to let that happen.

Just 21, and not even a year into her USWNT senior career, Morgan put home one of the biggest stoppage-time goals of her career (but not the only one). With a few minutes left, Morgan took a play from Wambach and sent it home, giving the USWNT the win.

Eventually, the team would go on to qualify for the World Cup, where they would finish runners-up to Japan.

    7First World Cup goal

After being a major catalyst in getting the USWNT to the 2011 World Cup, Morgan got her first real moment on the big stage at that tournament. While she had just two goals and one assist, they were impactful points for the team.

Her first World Cup goal came against France in the semifinals, all but putting an end to France’s chances. She would then break the scoreless tie against Japan in the final, which the USWNT would ultimately lose. That was just the start, however, as Morgan would go on to help the USWNT win the next two World Cups.

    6Olympic header

In what was perhaps her most famous goal, Morgan scored in an epic semifinal against Canada at the 2012 London Olympics to send the USWNT on to the Gold Medal final, which they would eventually win.

It’s a semifinal that has at times been tabbed as one of the greatest games in women’s soccer history, with Christine Sinclair notching a hat trick for Canada and Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd scoring goals for the USWNT. The game went into extras, tied 3-3, and Morgan would shine in the final 30 seconds of added time. In the 123rd minute she sent home a header, which is arguably one of the most famous goals in U.S. Soccer history.

It also saved the USWNT from heading to penalties. While it was just one game in an illustrious rivalry with Canada, Morgan cemented herself as a key player with that goal.

    5Five-goal game ... really!

While the USWNT dominated Thailand in the 2019 World Cup, Morgan played a key part in the historic victory. It was a precursor to the rest of the tournament, with Morgan sending home five goals in the 13-0 win and tying the single-game record at a FIFA World Cup.

She would go on to finish with six goals and three assists throughout the tournament to take home the Silver Boot and a second World Cup trophy.

    4Sipping the tea against England

Perhaps one of the most iconic celebrations of all time, in any sport, ever, Morgan went viral in 2019 for a “tea sip” celebration after scoring against England in the semifinals of the World Cup. It came on the occasion of her 30th birthday, as she became the first player in Women’s World Cup history to score on their birthday.

While some criticized her for the celebration, Morgan was a staunch defender of it – and called out the double standards that female athletes face.

“I feel that there is some sort of double-standard for females in sports, to feel like we have to be humble in our successes and have to celebrate, but not too much or in a limited fashion,” she said.

    3100 international goals

In the grand scheme, not many players have scored for the USWNT, let alone reaching the century mark in goals. But Morgan did, scoring her 100th in April of 2019 against Australia.

Even today, only six other players have scored 100 goals in a USWNT uniform: Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd, Kristine Lilly, Michelle Akers, and Tiffeny Milbrett.

  • 2Tying the NWSL single-game scoring record

Morgan’s best NWSL campaign came in 2022, in the Wave’s first season as an expansion team. In the team’s inaugural regular season home opener, Morgan gave her hometown crowd something to cheer about, scoring all four of the team’s goals in its 4-0 win over NJ/NY Gotham FC.

That total tied the record for most goals scored by a single player in an NWSL game alongside Sam Kerr (Sky Blue, 2017) and Kristen Hamilton (North Carolina Courage, 2019). Morgan would go on to win the NWSL Golden Boot that season.

    12018 CONCACAF Championship

Morgan had a number of memorable tournaments, including the 20218 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. She scored the game-winner in the championship in the 89th minute (anyone else sensing a theme?), just one of seven in the tournament.

She won Golden Boot in that tournament, with only one other player finishing with six or more goals.
