Ajax star, dual-national Lily Yohannes elects to represent United States over Netherlands

The teenager, who has made one senior appearance for the USWNT, will suit up for Emma Hayes' side going forward

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Lily Yohannes will forgo her eligibility to represent the Netherlands, and spend her international career with the USWNT, she announced Monday on social media.

    The Ajax midfielder has already made one appearance for the USWNT, where she found the net to become the third youngest goalscorer in the country's history.

    Her future had been the subject of much speculation, with the midfielder saying as recently as September that she had not decided whether to play for the Netherlands or U.S.

    Players under 21 are still allowed to change countries if they have played fewer than four international matches.

    The Ajax midfielder released a lengthy statement explaining her decision: "I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the United States and Dutch Football Federations for their unwavering support and patient guidance as I made my decision regarding my international future. Their dedication and encouragement have been invaluable, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to both Federations.

    "After much consideration, I have decided to commit to represent my country, the United States. The U.S. is my homeland, my birthplace, and where my extended family resides. These strong connections have driven me to honor my roots and proudly commit to U.S. soccer. I am excited and eager to continue putting in the work and earn my place on the U.S. Women’s National Team."

    WHAT NEXT FOR YOHANNES?

    The midfielder is now fully in consideration for the USWNT. Hayes' side take on England and Netherlands in a pair of friendlies on Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, respectively.
