The Dutchman is flying in the A-League and has defied his positioning with a stunning stat

1,583. That's the number of passes Sydney FC defender Jordy Buijs has made this season and it's more than any other player in the A-League.

It's a remarkable stat for a well-built centre back, with the top five in fact rounded out solely by midfielders with Luke Brattan a close second and Joshua Brillante third.

The Dutchman's willingness to get forward has been a real asset for the Sky Blues this season with his lumbering runs forward the perfect catalyst for a Sydney FC side that thrive on the counter.

Buijs in fact has three assists to his name this season, creating six big chances and setting up 27 shots along the way as his influence extends well beyond the back line.

That's not to take anything away from the 29-year-old's defensive abilities either with Buijs winning 73 percent of aerial duels and 57 percent of tackles as he played a big part in ensuring his side let in just 22 goals.

Not selected in the Sky Blues Asian Champions League squad, Buijs' absence was felt as Sydney FC failed to get out of their group with his strength at the back missed just as much as his ability to bomb forward.

Having played as a defensive midfielder in patches throughout his career, the Dutchman's ability with the ball at his feet isn't all that surprising but does prove he's far more than just a typical centre back.

One of many Sydney FC players out of contract at the end of the season, he should be a man in demand should the Sky Blues let him slip through their fingers and at just 29, he's clearly still got plenty to give.
