SuperSport United recently played out to a goalless draw against Orlando Pirates as they resumed their Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign on Tuesday evening.

The point earned, now sees SuperSport in 10th position on the log with several games in hand, putting them in pole position leading up to the Christmas break.

However, Matsatsantsa cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal as inconsistency has plagued many of the league’s bigger sides, but Eric Tinkler believes that this could be SuperSport’s time in the sun.

“Currently we are the only team who are really on target. What I mean by that is that prior to this game [against Pirates] we had six games and 13 points‚ which is trying to average two points per game‚” Tinkler said.

“Now we have 14 points [from seven games]. So, we’re still there, and I explained to the players that if we can collect at least 14 from the available 18 points [from games in hand], we could find ourselves at Christmas being top of the league and we would still have four games in hand,” he added.

“But obviously you explain to the players the importance of tonight [against Pirates] because none of the games are going to be easy,” he said.

Tinkler though, is not taking anything for granted and explains that while picking up points against the likes of Pirates is not the challenge, it is the smaller games that they need to be wary of.

“When you’re playing Pirates‚ for coaches it’s quite easy because you know that the motivation‚ determination and work ethic will be there,” he explained.

“Your worry comes when you go to the [likes of] Free State Stars and Baroka. Teams that win leagues are teams who get points against those teams,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Tinkler stated that SuperSport can still afford one more draw before the Christmas break.

“So, now we know that there’s one draw gone. We can afford one more, but we need wins – and then we can find ourselves there,” he concluded.
