Thabo Matlaba red-carded against SuperSport United
The three players have been deemed surplus to requirements by Micho Sredojevic, and they will now move to Port Elizabeth for the new season

Chippa United have signed Thabo Matlaba, Bernard Morrison and Thamsanqa Sangweni from Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers previously vowed to trim the squad to a manageable size after starting their pre-season training with 45 players.

However, it wasn't clear at the time who exactly coach Micho Sredojevic was going to offload.

Having signed nine new players at the end of last season, Pirates were expected to get rid of a few experienced campaigners to accomodate the new ones.

Matlaba's departure will come as a huge surprise to the majority of Bucs supporters, especially after he was made captain not so long ago.

His long-term injury at the beginning of last season saw him lose his place to PSL rookie Innocent Maela, who went on to make 26 appearances for the club.

Sangweni on the hand, was expected to leave the club after it became evident that he was never on Sredojevic's plans last season.

He hardly featured for the Sea Robbers, making his first season at the club very difficult.

While Sredojevic continued to play his cards close to his chest regarding his plans for Sangweni, it was always clear that the former Mamelodi Sundowns man stood no chance of playing regular football at the Houghton-based side.

Morrison appeared to be enjoying his football in the latter stages of the previous campaign, and very few people expected him to leave the club.

The Chilli Boys took to their social media platforms to announce the trio's arrivals without disclosing the details of their contracts.

According to Chippa, the three players were brought in to replace Ayabulela Konqobe, Mndlinzo and Setelele, who all left the club earlier this week.

"The three players have been brought in not only to fill the gaps left by the departure of Konqobe, Mdlinzo and Setelele earlier in the week, but to also bolster the squad and bring in more experienced players," said the club in a statement.

Matlaba, Morrison and Sangweni will link up with the rest of their new teammates in Johannesburg on Saturday, before travelling to Port Elizabeth next Wednesday.
