Mathare United CEO Jacktone Obure has come clear over the reasons behind key players leaving the team for other clubs.
The ‘Slum Boys’ lost Obadiah Ndege, Peter Odhiambo, Whyvonne Isuza, Robinson Kamura and Mboya to their competitors. Obure has also admitted that the players were vital for the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions, but the team had to let them go.
"You cannot keep a player against his wish, that is a fact and we are not an exception in this case. All the players who have left were good to us, key players for the team, but we just had to let go.
"We tried to talk to them and convince them extend their contracts but they refused. It was not about money because we were ready to increase their salaries. They left because they wanted a new challenge elsewhere and we had no option but let them leave," he told Goal.
Mathare United are expected to challenge for league title this season after falling short in the previous one.
