Azango, Zubairu and Yem help AS Trencin hold AEK Larnaca

The Slovak Super Liga side was held at home by the Cypriots in Thursday’s play-off round with the Nigerians playing key roles

Abdul Zubairu, Reuben Yem and Philip Azango were on parade as AS Trencin were held to a 1-1 draw by AEK Larnaca in the Europa League play-off round.

Having scaled Feyenoord hurdle in the third qualifying round, the Slovak Super Liga side came into to the encounter with the aspiration of progressing to the main competition.

After a goalless first half, Trencin took the lead after 55 minutes through Joey Sleegers. However, their goal was erased five minutes later after Acoran Barrera levelled matters for the Cypriots.

Goalkeeper Tono Ramirez was at his best to deny the Slovaks a chance to secure victory at Stadion na Sihoti.

While Azango and Yem were on parade for the entire duration of the tie, Zubairu – who was cautioned in the 81st minute – made way for Desley Ubbink seven minutes from full time.

The return leg holds at the AEK Arena - Georgios Karapatakis on August 30, with the winner on aggregate making it to the Europa League group stage.
