A touch of respect from the supposed rival code

The AFL and the A-League have been far from friends over the years, but the former has made a noticeable fixture amendment for the round ball competition.

With the AFL's 2019 fixture list revealed on Thursday, they've confirmed that round nine will be a 'flex' round with two games potentially switching days should the A-League require Marvel Stadium for their grand final.

Should Melbourne Victory earn hosting rights for the decider than the stadium will be needed and the AFL has taken a surprisingly proactive stance for such an outcome.

Venue sharing has been an issue for the two codes in the past with Victory forced to host the 2015 grand final at AAMI Park as a result and the A-League now looks set to benefit should the decider take place in Melbourne.

The odds of a grand final in the state are fairly high too with Victory set to be strong contenders this season.

With Keisuke Honda on their books, Kevin Muscat's side were widely tipped to finish first but have started the season poorly with consecutive losses.

The 2010 A-League grand final was the last to take place at Marvel Stadium, which was then known as Etihad Stadium, with Victory losing to Sydney FC on penalties.
