In the end, neither were able to find that all-important third goal, with Lejeune going closest with a last-minute header that was cleared off the line by Davis. The draw means Newcastle remain in ninth place heading into their next game against Crystal Palace, while Southampton, who now sit in 10th, must take on West Bromwich Albion.
Newcastle looked to be on course for another victory after impressing during the first half, but Southampton showed great grit and determination to fight back and score twice through Gabbiadini. The Italian's second goal came from the penalty spot after Long was clumsily fouled by Lejeune, and after that an open end to the game could have resulted in a winner for either side.
FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED
90' + 6' Newcastle keep pushing forward as they try to find late winner. It's Murphy who gets a shot away from 25 yards out, and his curling strike deflects off Van Dijk and behind for a corner. Ritchie steps up and curls a cross towards Lejeune, but Van Dijk is there once again to clear the ball. That should be that.
90' + 4' Yedlin gets himself into a pocket of space out wide and immediately swings a dangerous cross into the middle of the box, where several Newcastle players are waiting. It's Yoshida who manages to get a head on the ball though, and he clears the danger without too many problems.
90' + 3' Vital interception by Van Dijk! Shelvey muscles his way into the Southampton half of the pitch as the visitors try to quickly counter-attack. He's just about able to play a swift one-two with Gayle before heading towards the box, but Van Dijk manages to throw a leg out to deny the midfielder a way through on goal.
90' + 1' Ouch! Ritchie and Hayden clash heads on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area as they try to deal with a dangerous bouncing ball. They both initially look to be in a lot of discomfort, but they should be able to continue in a few moments' time.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
89' Off the line by Davis! Shelvey makes a nuisance of himself inside the home side's box and does well to win Newcastle a corner over on the left flank. It's Ritchie who sends the ball back into the penalty area, where Lejeune manages to get a header away but can't beat Davis at the far post.
88' Cedric tries to fire in a low cross from deep down the right flank but has to settle for a corner after the ball is deflected behind by Lejeune. The set-piece is curled in by Bertrand and heads towards Austin, who rises high but loses out to Elliot.
86' Bertrand embarks on a great run as he storms down the left wing. He manages to get himself into a pocket of space and then fizzes a dangerous pass across the face of goal, where Elliot pushes the ball away from danger before Gabbiadini can latch onto it.
84' A lofted pass from Van Dijk is fired deep into the Newcastle half of the pitch and manages to pick out Gabbiadini, but the striker can't quite get the better of Merino and has the ball poked away from him by the Spanish midfielder.
J. Murphy
C. Atsu
82' Meanwhile, Jacob Murphy has replaced Atsu for the visitors.
C. Austin
S. Long
82' Southampton have made another attacking alteration, with Long making way for Charlie Austin up front.
81' Gayle is clumsily bundled over just outside of the Southampton penalty area on the right flank, handing Ritchie a chance opportunity to whip in a cross. His ball into the box is a poor one, however, and the cross-cum-shot flies wide of the far post.
I. Hayden
Yellow Card
79' And now Hayden has been booked for a late challenge in a very similar position to Gabbiadini a few moments ago. The tackle wasn't too dissimilar to Yedlin's, but this one earns the midfielder a yellow card.
78' A lofted pass forward manages to pick out Hayden on the edge of the hosts' box. He quickly spins and tees up Ritchie, who then fires a thumping shot that seems to deflect off Van Dijk's chest and into his arm. The Newcastle winger immediately appeals for a penalty, but the referee isn't at all interested and waves play on.
M. Gabbiadini
Yellow Card
77' Gabbiadini becomes the latest player to receive a yellow card after clumsily flying into a challenge on the halfway line.
76' Newcastle immediately win themselves a free-kick over on the right flank from the restart. It's fired in by Shelvey and manages to find Lejeune, who rises high and gets a head on the ball but can only nod it down into the hands of Forster.

S. Davis
Oriol Romeu
67' Southampton have made an attacking switch, with Romeu making way for Steven Davis in midfield.
66' After dealing with another Southampton attacking move, Newcastle quickly break forward on a swift counter-attack down the left flank. It's Manquillo who charges forward before trying to penetrate the penalty area, but a poor final touch lets him down at the vital moment.
65' Bertrand and Long link up well on the edge of the Newcastle box, setting up the Irishman to knock the ball back to Lemina. The midfielder quickly shoots, but there are too many defenders camped in front of him and he's unable to test Elliot.
Mikel Merino
Ayoze Pérez
63' Newcastle have made their first alteration of the game, with Mikel Merino coming on to replace Perez.
62' Atsu showcases lovely footwork over on the left flank as he cuts inside and tees up Ritchie just outside of the Southampton penalty area. He quickly shoots, but his thumping effort is closed down and deflects behind for a corner that the home side are just about able to deal with.
61' Gabbiadini is presented with another opportunity to get a shot away after more good play from Southampton, but he ends up straying offside and the linesman's flag is raised as soon as he gets a shot away from the edge of the box.
59' Gabbiadini receives the ball at his feet just inside the Newcastle penalty area and quickly tries to spin and shoot. He goes down to the ground after battling with Lejeuene and half-heartedly appeals for a penalty, but the referee awards a free-kick to Newcastle for shirt pulling from the Italian.
S. Boufal
N. Redmond
57' Southampton have made their first change of the afternoon, with Redmond making way for Sofiane Boufal out wide.
55' Big call by the referee! Yedlin, who has already been yellow carded, flies into Redmond and catches the winger with a mistimed sliding challenge. The defender panics as it looks as if he's going to be given his marching orders, but the referee instead just decides to give him one final warning. The home fans aren't at all happy with that decision!
53' Redmond twists and turns over on the left wing before trying to set up a team-mate inside the Newcastle penalty area, but his pass is slightly overhit and Elliot is comfortably able to deal with it.
Ayoze Pérez
Goal

The Spaniard's quick shot is saved by Forster at the near post, but a poor stop from the goalkeeper pushes the ball straight back to the forward, who is then easily able to bury his follow-up effort.
N. Redmond
Assist
49' That was good play by Redmond to set up Gabbiadini, and it's a goal that will have been enthusiastically celebrated by Mauricio Pellegrino over on the touchline. It's been a tough afternoon for the home side, but they're finally back in the game with a rare home goal.
M. Gabbiadini
Goal
49' GOAL! Gabbiadini equalises for Southampton! The home side work the ball around nicely as they put Newcastle under plenty of pressure. 47' Joselu hits the crossbar! Perez gets the better of Van Dijk out wide before cutting inside and firing a cross towards the near post. Joselu sticks out a foot and makes contact with the ball, and his glancing effort ends up hitting the woodwork after getting the better of Forster.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
Southampton have dominated possession so far but they've struggled to break down a compact and well-organised Newcastle back line. The visitors have dug in well and frustrated their opponents, who have strung together some decent passes in the final third of the pitch but have found it difficult to test Elliot with any clear-cut chances.
HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
45' + 1' Newcastle are presented with one final opportunity to launch the ball into the hosts' box after winning a free-kick on the halfway line, but Shelvey's lofted pass forward is easily dealt with by Lemina, bringing an end to what has been another disappointing first half for Southampton.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' A clever throw-in from Manquillo loops into the Southampton box and manages to pick out Joselu in a pocket of space. 43' Newcastle have been on the back foot since going ahead, but they're finally able to push forward once again. Ritchie pulls off an acrobatic overhead kick that sends the ball looping over to the far post, where Atsu gets a shot away but fires his first-time volley well wide of the goal.
42' Tadic and Long link up well on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, setting up the Irishman to shoot. His effort is blocked by Lascelles but he manages to nod the ball down towards Gabbiadini, who sticks out a foot in front of goal but can't quite latch onto it ahead of Elliot.
41' Elliot darts out quickly once again as he tries to deal with a dangerous, looping corner, but this time he's able to get a fist on the ball and can punch it away from the on-rushing Van Dijk.
D. Yedlin
Yellow Card
40' DeAndre Yedlin seemed to talk out of turn to the referee after getting frustrated about something, and he's shown a yellow card for dissent after the Southampton attack comes to an end.
40' Ryan Bertrand darts down the left flank on a great run before firing a low cross into the heart of the visitors' box, where it finds Tadic in a decent position. The Serbian quickly shoots, but Lejeune sticks out a foot to make sure it deflects behind for a corner.
39' Lascelles has his arms all over Long, who is dragged to the ground from behind and wins a free-kick for Southampton in a promising position 30 yards away from the Newcastle goal. Bertrand's cross into the box is a good one and finds Van Dijk, who does well to get a head on the ball but can't do anything with it.
37' A poor attempted clearance from Elliot can only find Tadic, and the Serbian quickly tees up Long on the edge of the box. The striker breaks into the penalty area and shoots, but Hayden is there to block his low effort with a well-timed interception.
35' Good play by Tadic and Cedric sets up the Portuguese to cross, but Jonjo Shelvey is there to win back possession for the visitors. He then tries to kick-start a counter-attack, but Newcastle don't break away quickly enough and it fails to result in anything.
33' Tadic wins Southampton a throw-in deep down the right flank that's quickly sent to Redmond, but the winger is closed down by a group of blue shirts and Newcastle are able to hold on once again.
31' The home side are continuing to enjoy the majority of possession as they keep putting pressure on the Newcastle back line, but this time a poor pass from Yoshida fails to find a team-mate inside the final third of the pitch and rolls out for a throw-in.
29' Southampton are enjoying a decent spell of possession as they try to find a way back into the game. This time it's Lemina who manages to get a shot away, but his 25-yard volleyed effort is mishit and sails comfortably wide of the near post.
28' Almost another great chance for Gabbiadini! Southampton quickly win the ball back and work it over to Yoshida over on the left flank. The defender immediately whips a wonderful cross into the penalty area and towards Gabbiadini, who tries his hardest to latch onto the ball in front of goal but can't quite do so.
27' A clumsy challenge on the break results in a free-kick for Southampton in a dangerous position midway inside the visitors' half of the pitch. Redmond tries to play a deft pass into the penalty area, but it's underhit and fails to pick out Long inside the box.

24' Big call by the referee! For a moment it looks as if Perez has got the better of Yoshida out wide after knocking the defender off the ball, but just as he's about to penetrate the penalty area and go one-on-one with Forster, the referee awards a free-kick to Southampton.
22' Van Dijk almost equalises! The set-piece is curled into the heart of the box and manages to pick out Van Dijk, who latches onto the ball after Rob Elliot completely misses it but can't hit the target with his glancing header.
21' Almost a great chance for Manolo Gabbiadini! A dangerous lofted pass is fired towards the near post and manages to pick out Gabbiadini, who desperately tries to get a shot away but is closed down by Florian Lejeune at the vital moment, resulting in a corner for Southampton.
I. Hayden
Goal
20' GOAL! Newcastle have taken the lead! Southampton are unable to fully clear the danger, allowing the visitors to push forward once again. A low cross in from the left flank finds Atsu, who quickly shoots but sees his strike blocked by Yoshida. The Japanese defender can only clear the ball as far as Hayden, however, and the midfielder immediately unleashes a thumping effort that flies into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
19' Newcastle push forward once again and win themselves another corner after a low cross from Ritchie is deflected behind by Shane Long. Ritchie's cross into the box is a better one and manages to find Jamal Lascelles, but the defender can only send his tame headed effort straight into the hands of Forster.
18' Cedric is put under pressure by Atsu and has to head the ball behind for a Newcastle corner. Matt Ritchie steps up and curls a cross into the middle of the penalty area, where Van Dijk rises high and easily clears the danger.
17' Fraser Forster is almost caught out! The ball is played back to the Southampton goalkeeper, who takes an age to clear the danger. Perez closes him down and gives the home side a real scare, but, luckily for the Englishman, the ball deflects behind for a goal-kick.
16' What a chance for Tadic! Redmond twists and turns over on the left flank before curling a lovely cross over to the far post. It picks out Tadic in a pocket of space, but the Serbian can't keep his header down and sends it looping onto the top of the net.
14' Tadic does well to spin round Shelvey midway inside the Newcastle half of the pitch before bombing towards the penalty area. He then manages to get a shot away, but there's slightly too much power behind it and it ends up sailing high over the top of the crossbar.
12' Hayden picks up the ball on the halfway line and quickly tries to pick out Atsu deep down the left wing, but the midfielder's lofted pass is slightly overhit and fails to find the Ghanaian before bouncing behind for a goal-kick.
10' Oriol Romeu clatters into Shelvey and brings the Newcastle midfielder crashing to the ground, resulting in a free-kick for Newcastle on the halfway line. It's thumped forward but fails to result in a chance on goal, as Southampton are easily able to deal with the danger.
9' Atsu goes close! Ayoze Perez is presented with a great chance to fire a low cross into the Southampton box, but it's underhit and deflected behind by Virgil van Dijk for a corner. The set-piece is only half cleared by Mario Lemina and flies out to Atsu, who quickly unleashes a low strike that flies just wide of the near post and into the side-netting.
7' Dusan Tadic makes a clever run into the right-hand side of the Newcastle penalty area as he tries to latch onto a lofted pass forward from Cedric, but Isaac Hayden is there to get the better of the Serbian before he's able to do so.
5' Christian Atsu picks up the ball deep down the left flank and is quickly put under pressure by Cedric Soares. He spins and tries to tee up Manquillo, but his pass is slightly mishit and rolls out for a throw-in before it can find the Spaniard.
3' A long ball forward from Maya Yoshida manages to pick out Nathan Redmond in a pocket of space over on the left flank. The winger cuts inside quickly and then curls a cross over to the far post, where Javi Manquillo is just about able to head the ball away from danger at the vital moment.
1' We're off! Southampton get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Ciaran Clark and Mikel Merino making way for Florian Lejeune and Isaac Hayden, respectively.
Mauricio Pellegrino has decided to make just one change to the Southampton side that started the defeat away to Stoke City two weeks ago, with Manolo Gabbiadini coming into the starting line-up to replace Steven Davis.
Newcastle United substitutes: Darlow, Gamez, Clark, Diame, Merino, Murphy, Gayle.
Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Elliot; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Manquillo; Shelvey, Hayden; Ritchie, Perez, Atsu; Joselu.
Southampton substitutes: McCarthy, McQueen, Hoedt, Davis, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Austin.
Southampton XI (4-2-3-1): Forster; Cedric, Van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Lemina; Tadic, Long, Redmond, Gabbiadini.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Newcastle were beaten in two of their three away games this campaign, but all were closely fought affairs and they’ll be feeling quietly confident about their chances of coming away with all three points today. They’ve struggled against Southampton in recent years, however, with the Saints winning four of the last five meetings between the two sides.
Things are looking much more positive for Newcastle, who will move equal on points with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea if they’re victorious this afternoon. They did well to pick up a hard-earned draw at home to Liverpool before the international break and have enjoyed three wins and a draw from their last five Premier League games, the fourth-best record over that period.
Southampton’s main problem has been in the final third of the pitch, where they’ve desperately struggled to find the back of the net. Their record of failing to score in eight of their last nine home league games is an incredibly worrying one, and it doesn’t bode well for this afternoon’s clash against a well-organised and defensively compact Newcastle team.
While it may not have been an absolutely disastrous start to the season for Southampton, it certainly hasn’t been a particularly good one. They failed to impress under Claude Puel and have continued to struggle under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who already finds himself under pressure after managing to pick up just eight points from the opening seven games.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Southampton and Newcastle United at St. Mary’s.
