Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
City are next in action in the Premier League on the road against Southampton next Saturday. Chelsea return to action on Tuesday against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
Manchester City make it 12 wins in a row in the Premier League by beating Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium, continuing their march to the title. Kevin De Bruyne scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute with a fine run and finish, curling a strike from the edge of the box past Kepa Arrizabalaga. It was a contest of few chances, but the hosts dominated possession and had the clinical edge when it was needed the most to secure victory. City now move 13 points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table, surely ending the Blues' title hopes.
90' + 2' Grealish sends Walker down the right flank and he tries to send a low cross into the box. However, he scuffs his delivery behind for a goal kick.
90' There will be three minutes of added time.
90' Mount swings a cross into the City box from the right flank, but Stones is on hand to react ahead of Lukaku to clear the danger.
Gabriel Jesus
P. Foden
88' Foden makes his way from the field and is replaced by Jesus for the closing stages of the contest.
86' SAVE! Grealish squares up Azpilicueta with a run down the left flank, but sees his strike from a tight angle saved by Kepa before the keeper gathers at the second attempt, preventing a corner.
İ. Gündoğan
K. De Bruyne
84' Gundogan enters the action for the final five minutes to replace De Bruyne, who has made the decisive impact for the hosts today.
83' OVER! Sterling weaves his way out of three challenges before he offloads towards Foden on the edge of the Chelsea box. The forward steers a left-footed drive towards goal that he sends over the top.
M. Mount
Marcos Alonso
81' Mount replaces Alonso, which will require a re-shuffle from the Blues. Sarr may push into left-back in a four-man defence.
80' Silva catches Alonso as he tries to win the ball down the left flank. Hudson-Odoi takes the resulting free-kick, but fails to beat the first City defender.
79' Kante sends Azpilicueta down the right flank and he delivers a dangerous cross into the City box. However, it just evades Werner and Lukaku in the middle.
77' Chelsea now need to force the issue to get back into the game. They've been better in the second half pushing forward, but they now need to be even more aggressive in their approach.
74' De Bruyne has now scored five goals against his former club Chelsea in the Premier League; the most by a player against the Blues after having previously played for them in the competition.
72' BLOCK! Hudson-Odoi breaks down the left flank and lifts a cross to the back post. Azpilicueta steers it towards Werner to strike on the half-volley, but he sees his effort charged down by Laporte.
João Cancelo
70' Cancelo plays a simple offload through to De Bruyne in space before the Belgian does the rest with a fine run and finish.
K. De Bruyne
70' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!! DE BRUYNE CURLS CITY 1-0 AHEAD!!! The Belgian fends off a challenge from Kante before curling a strike from 20 yards past Kepa. Cancelo works the ball into space for the City captain and he just has the strength to avoid being felled by Kante. De Bruyne continues his surge towards the edge of the box before whipping a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner.
C. Hudson-Odoi
H. Ziyech
69' Hudson-Odoi replaces Ziyech down the left flank for the visitors.
T. Werner
C. Pulisic
69' Pulisic is withdrawn by the Blues and is replaced by Werner in the final third. The American has not been overly influential this afternoon.
68' WIDE! Foden slides an offload to Sterling in the Chelsea box and he twists and turns to open up room for a drive at goal that he places just wide of the left post.
66' Chelsea probe down the left flank and win a corner, but Laporte makes an important header under pressure to clear Ziyech's corner away from the lurking presence of Rudiger.
63' SAVE! De Bruyne curls his effort over the Chelsea wall towards the top-left corner, but Kepa gets across to palm it over the bar.
62' Grealish probes towards the edge of the Chelsea box before he gets clipped by Azpilicueta. The home side are awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position.
61' City work the ball in tight quarters on the edge of the Chelsea box before Silva surges into the right-inside channel. However, his cutback is deflected into the hands of Kepa.
60' Are the omens bleak for a win for Guardiola's men today? City have won their last 11 Premier League games, their fifth such run of 11+ consecutive victories in the competition. Three of their previous four such runs have been ended in a home match – 2-1 defeat to West Ham in September 2015, 2-2 vs Spurs in August 2019 and 2-0 loss to Manchester United in March 2021.
58' De Bruyne catches Ziyech with a late challenge on the right flank. He gives away a free-kick, but stays out of the book.
56' City continue to press and Rodri weaves his way forward before seeing his strike diverted behind for a corner by Sarr.
55' OFFSIDE! Sterling goes down in the box amid contact from Alonso, but the referee points for a free-kick to Chelsea for an offside against Walker earlier in the move.
53' De Bruyne opts to clip a cross into the box from the free-kick rather than fire at goal. It allows Kepa to leave his line and make a comfortable claim.
52' Kovacic catches Walker on the edge of the box with a boot on the ankle. The referee awards a free-kick to City in a dangerous position.
51' Sterling and Alonso collide down the City right flank. The home side look to the referee for a free-kick and a potential second booking for Alonso, but Craig Pawson waves play on.
50' OVER! Chelsea probe once more in the final third and Pulisic charges forward. He works a pass out to the left flank for Alonso in space, but the wing-back blazes his drive over the bar.
48' CHANCE! Chelsea cut open the City defence as Kovacic threads an offload through to Lukaku. The forward only has Ederson to beat, but the Brazilian palms away hs left-footed strike at goal before Ziyech lifts the rebound over the top.
47' De Bruyne wins the ball in a 50/50 challenge with Azpilicueta and places a dangerous low cross towards the back post. Sterling tries to reach it on the slide, but it just evades the forward.
47' Chelsea failed to attempt a shot in the first half at the Etihad; the first time they've failed to do so in a Premier League game under Thomas Tuchel, and first time overall since May 2018 v Newcastle.
46' We're back under way at the Etihad Stadium.
Thomas Tuchel will be satisfied with his side's performance thus far, although he has been a tad frustrated with their counters. There could have been a couple of opportunities had Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech had been more clinical. It could be an area to watch in the second half.
It's goalless at the break between Manchester City and Chelsea in their Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium. Jack Grealish had the best opening of the first half when he capitalised on a mistake from Mateo Kovacic, but the midfielder was denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga. City have been frustrated by the Chelsea rearguard, which has been stubborn thus far on the road.
45' There will be one minute of added time.
44' Foden loses possession in the Chelsea half and then lunges in on Kovacic. He gives away a free-kick, but avoids a booking.
43' OVER! Grealish probes down the left flank and works an offload back to De Bruyne in space in the box. He takes a good first touch, but he blasts the ball over the bar with his second.
41' City have dominated the first half, but have nothing to show for their efforts. They appear to be frustrated as we approach the break.
39' SAVE! Kovacic loses possession on the edge of the Chelsea box and the deflection from De Bruyne's challenge travels straight to Grealish. He makes a surge into the box and tries to poke an effort past Kepa, but the keeper spreads himself to divert his strike wide of the right post.
38' Walker sends De Bruyne behind the Chelsea defence and he clips a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Rudiger is forced to clear it behind, although the Belgian is offside anyway as the flag goes up late.
36' Laporte lifts a long ball over the top down the left flank for Grealish to chase. Kepa is the first man there and goes for the safe option of clearing into touch.
35' Foden drops his shoulder down the left flank and fires a low cross into the middle, but there's no one in a sky blue shirt there to convert the opening.
33' De Bruyne curls the resulting free-kick towards the back post from the right flank, but Alonso is on his mettle to clear behind away from Rodri.
M. Kovačić
Yellow Card
32' Kovacic catches Silva from behind with a poor challenge on the ankle. The midfielder goes into the book and hands City a free-kick in a good position.
29' Chelsea have a rare foray forward through Pulisic down the right flank. He sees his cross blocked, but Azpilicueta picks up the loose ball. The full-back passes straight to the American, who is immediately caught offside.
28' The home side are seeing a lot of the ball, but are struggling to break down the Blues to create clear-cut openings in the final third. Tuchel will not be too displeased so far.
26' City press down the left flank and Cancelo forces a low ball into the middle that Silva tries to steer towards goal. Sarr recognises the danger and makes the interception in the six-yard area.
24' SAVE! Grealish races down the left flank and sends a cutback towards De Bruyne in the inside channel. The Belgian has a toe-poke on his left foot that he fires straight into the hands of Kepa, who makes a clean grab.
21' Ziyech has space down the left flank and Lukaku in the middle, but again the winger fails to pick out the run of his team-mate as Laporte makes the interception in the City box.
19' Lukaku attempts a neat flick following an offload from Ziyech, but Cancelo tracking back nudges it away from Pulisic in the final third.
16' Sterling surges into the right-inside channel and shapes to send a cross into the middle. Sarr reacts with an inch-perfect challenge to divert the ball behind for a corner.
14' Ziyech has space to send Lukaku behind the City backline, only to overhit a simple throughball into the hands of Ederson. Tuchel is furious with execution from the winger.
14' SAVE! Stones rises highest in the box to attack a cross from Sterling into the middle, but he plants his header straight at Kepa.
13' Cancelo sends a long ball over the top that De Bruyne keeps in play in the left-inside channel. He sends a cutback towards the penalty spot that Alonso clears.
12' Grealish has a run at Rudiger down the left flank, but the German holds his ground and ushers the ball behind for a goal kick.
10' Lukaku makes a dangerous turn in the City half and he breaks away from Laporte. He bursts into the box and opts against the strike, instead placing an offload towards Ziyech, who cannot reach it on the slide. The winger was offside anyway and Lukaku should have gone for goal.
8' De Bruyne lifts the resulting free-kick into the box from the right flank, but Rudiger rises highest to head the ball clear of danger.
Marcos Alonso
Yellow Card
7' Sterling surges past Alonso down the left flank and the defender brings him down with a loose challenge from behind. The Spaniard goes into the book for his challenge.
4' Laporte angles a ball over the top for Grealish to chase against Azpilicueta. Kepa commits as he races off his line and he smashes his clearance off his team-mate and behind for a corner. That could have gone anywhere.
2' De Bruyne tries to release Foden in behind Azpilicueta down the left flank, but the Spaniard makes an excellent interception.
1' We're under way at the Etihad Stadium.
Following their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, City are looking to secure the Premier League double over Chelsea for the fourth time, previously doing so in 2009-10, 2015-16 and 2017-18.
Chelsea have made five changes to their side that beat Tottenham in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final. Andreas Christensen has tested positive for COVID-19 and misses out. Thiago Silva returns to replace the Dane in the backline. Alonso gets the start at wing-back, while Kante, Ziyech and Pulisic are also recalled into the team. Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Werner and Jorginho all make way.
Guardiola rang the changes for the FA Cup against Swindon but has reverted to a more familiar line-up for the Premier League. Five players remain from the side that defeated Swindon, but six others come into the fold. Dias loses his place in the back four to Stones, while Laporte replaces Nathan Ake. Ederson takes his spot back between the posts after Steffen deputised in the cup. Foden, Grealish and Sterling return in the final third as Gundogan and Jesus drop to the bench, but there's no place on the bench for Cole Palmer.
CHELSEA SUBS: Jorginho, Timo Werner, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marcus Bettinelli, Saul Niguez, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Kai Havertz.
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr; Cesar Azpilicueta, N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Marcos Alonso; Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Ruben Dias, Ilkay Gundogan, Gabriel Jesus, Zack Steffen, Fernandinho, Luke Mbete, James McAtee, Romeo Lavia, Josh Wilson-Esbrand.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Joao Cancelo; Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva; Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden.
Chelsea are in a must-win situation today to claw back ground in the Premier League title race. They trail City by 10 points in second place in the table and must start pegging back Guardiola and company before they surge towards the crown. The Blues produced a fine performance to secure their place in the EFL Cup final by beating Tottenham during the week. In their last Premier League outing, Chelsea came from two behind to draw against Liverpool, but they're going to have to be even better to earn a positive result today. Tuchel has got the better of Guardiola in the past, none more so than the Champions League final last season. He needs another tactical masterstroke.
City have a huge opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 13 points by beating Chelsea this afternoon. Pep Guardiola's men have reeled off 11 wins on the bounce in the top flight and are seemingly on the march to the title. Defeating the Blues would effectively remove Chelsea from the title race. City dispatched Swindon Town in the third round of the FA Cup last time out, and have been well rested for the challenge of Thomas Tuchel and company.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
