Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Cagliari and Inter! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Cagliari finish their season away from home against Venezia while Inter welcome Sampdoria to the Giuseppe Meazza!
Inter come away from the Unipol Domus with a necessary three points, beating Cagliari by three goals to one thanks to Darmian’s headed finish, as well as two goals for Martinez. The Argentina international looked to sow up the result eight minutes after the restart with a lovely taken goal, but Lykogiannis’ stunning strike from distance just 120 seconds later would make for a nervy finish. The hosts did not do enough with the few half-chances they had while behind by a single goal and the lack of clinical finishing would come back to haunt the Rossoblu, with Martinez’s second goal of the game from the counter-attack guaranteeing the result for the Nerazzuri with six minutes left. The win puts Inter two points back of Milan with one game left, while Cagliari stay in 18th.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: CAGLIARI 1-3 INTER.
90' + 3' The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
90' + 1' Baselli has a strike at goal from distance but he fails to get his angles correct - sending the shot high and wide.
89' Martinez (21 goals) is become the sixth player in Inter’s history to score 20 goals in a single Serie A season before turning 25, after Giuseppe Meazza, Sandro Mazzola, Antonio Angelillo, Ronaldo and Mauro Icardi.

86' Pereiro is sent on for Dalbert with Cagliari looking to prevent the score from getting worse.
A. Sánchez
Lautaro Martínez
85' Sanchez comes on for Martinez just a minute after netting his second goal of the game.
Lautaro Martínez
Goal
84' INTER GO TWO GOALS AHEAD! 3-1! Gagliardini somewhat surprisingly leads Inter on a quick counter-attack, drawing three defenders towards him before slipping a selfless pass across the face of goal for Martinez. The striker meets the pass with a lovely scooped finish, sending it up and over a sprawling Cragno!
R. Gagliardini
Assist
84' Assist Roberto Gagliardini
83' OVER! Calhanoglu sees his shot from close range blocked but he intelligently picks up the rebound and drives towards the byline, sending a cross into the near post for Martinez. The striker swivels and hits an audacious volley but gets his angles wrong and narrowly misses the target!
81' Joao Pedro is pleading for a penalty after shouts of handball following a Lykogiannis cross but the referee is unconvinced as he urges Handanovic to restart play from a goal-kick.
A. Carboni
G. Altare
79' Carboni replaces Altare in a straight swap at centre-back.
D. Baselli
R. Marin
79' Baselli comes on for Marin with just over 10 minutes left in the contest.
78' PERISIC JUST WIDE! Looking to restore their two-goal margin, Dumfries sends a lovely cross into the penalty area for a wide-open Perisic, who flashes his header disappointingly wide of the target.
76' Cagliari finally win the ball back but Cragno’s long-range pass down the left flank for Keita gives the ball right back to Inter - who turn back to Handanovic. The home supporters are growing restless as their side once again fail to put any sustained pressure on their opponents.
74' Correa goes down under close marking from Altare - giving Inter a free-kick just inside Cagliari’s half. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the match, Inzaghi’s side will welcome every opportunity to run down the clock.
72' Cagliari are now looking to press the Inter player in possession, which could prove a risky tactic. It will force the visitors to move the ball quicker than anticipated but with gaps starting to open up in the Rossoblu defence - a third goal for Inzaghi’s side would end the match as a contest.
J. Correa
E. Džeko
70' Correa comes in for Dzeko as Inter make a change in attack.
D. D'Ambrosio
A. Bastoni
70' D'Ambrosio is on for Bastoni as Inzaghi looks to shore up the defence with 20 minutes left.
68' Altare’s long pass gives De Vrij trouble, allowing Keita to latch onto the ball inside the penalty area. The former Inter player attempts to send a volley overtop the oncoming Handanovic but the forward gets his angles wrong and misses the target.
66' Altare hits a pass over the top of the defence for Joao Pedro looking to find the run of the captain but the miscommunication allows Gagliardini to whack the ball away easily.
64' Cagliari have really woken up since going two goals behind, with the hosts’ passing quicker and much more sharp than in the opening hour. The fans are certainly doing their part in the stands around the Unipol Domus but Inter are still ahead on the score line.
62' Cagliari have won just three home games this season, their joint-fewest in a single campaign in their Serie A history (level with 1999-00).
60' Lykogiannis links up with former Inter defender Dalbert on the left wing but the ensuing cross from the Greece international is blocked at the outset by Dumfries.

L. Pavoletti
56' Former Inter winger Keita is sent on for the uninvolved Pavoletti.
N. Nández
M. Rog
56' Nandez comes on for Rog with just over 30 minutes left in the match.
55' Cagliari finally muster the response that Alessandro Agostini was no doubt begging them for at the half-time interval, with Lykogiannis’ shot from distance coming just two minutes after Inter’s second. A point at home against the Nerazzurri would still be a tremendous result for the Rossoblu, who should gain some confidence after beating Handanovic.
C. Lykogiannis
Goal
54' OUT OF NOWHERE - CAGLIARI HALF THE DEFICIT! 2-1! This is turning into a bit of a mad match as Cagliari go up the other end of the pitch through Bellanova, who passes it to the left for Rog. Rog finds Lykogiannis and the full-back steps up to hammer home a shot from distance!
M. Rog
Assist
54' Rog's simple pass to the left for Lykogiannis is credited with the assist.
N. Barella
Assist
51' Barella registers an assist against his former team - finding Martinez for the all-important insurance goal.
Lautaro Martínez
Goal
51' MARTINEZ DOUBLES INTER’S ADVANTAGE! 2-0! A long pass is launched over the top of the defence by Barella for the striker, who beats Altare for pace and power before slotting a finish into the far corner!
48' The ball is put out of play for Joao Pedro, who is down on the turf holding his foot after a clash with Dzeko. The magic spray is being applied to the Cagliari captain - who still appears to be in real pain.
46' Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Inter are certainly superior on the pitch but it won’t matter unless they get a bit of insurance, with Cagliari poised to fight desperately until the last minute for a result that will help them towards survival. Former Inter winger Keita as well as the physically imposing Pereiro will be the most likely entrants for the Rossoblu, while Darmian’s yellow card makes him a candidate to be substituted in the second half.
A comfortable Inter take a 1-0 lead into the half-time interval at the Unipol Domus, with Darmian’s headed goal after 25 minutes separating the two sides. The Nerazzurri thought they had taken the lead 14 minutes earlier after Skriniar bundled home Calhanoglu’s free-kick but a VAR review denied the strike for handball. Even still, Inzaghi’s side looked imperious and could be ahead by a few more if not for some inaccurate finishing and good goalkeeping from Cragno. Lykogiannis’ shot from distance aside the hosts have failed to trouble Handanovic in the Inter net - with the shot-stopper forced into just one save.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: CAGLIARI 0-1 INTER.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
45' OFF THE POST! UNBELIEVABLE! The forward receives a pass inside the penalty area with his back to goal before turning on the swivel and hitting a right-footed shot through the legs of Ceppitelli! The effort strikes the base of the woodwork before the Argentina international’s follow-up effort is tipped over!
43' Inter stride away on the counter-attack but Barella’s pass for Darmian puts him too wide of the goal before a half-hearted cross is blocked easily by Lykogiannis.
41' Rog fires a pass into Pavoletti 25 yards from goal but the striker isn’t allowed to turn under pressure from three Inter defenders, who converge to win back possession deep in their own half.
39' Joao Pedro breaks into the Inter penalty area and drives towards the byline but he disappointingly slips at the last moment - allowing De Vrij to clear his area easily.
M. Darmian
Yellow Card
37' A two-footed sliding challenge from Darmian on Rog earns the Inter wing-back the first yellow card of the game.
35' Inter are keeping the ball very easily as they move from left to right looking for an opening in Cagliari’s midfield. With just 10 minutes left in the first half, it’s gone about as well as Inzaghi could have hoped pre-match.
33' Calhanoglu’s corner from the right finds the head of an unmarked Bastoni but the Italy international centre-back is unable to turn his close-range header on target- sending it high above the crossbar.
31' Inter waste a free-kick in a similar position to the one that produced Skriniar’s disallowed goal, with Calhanoglu this time playing it short to Barella. The midfielder denies the opportunity to strike towards goal and ends up losing possession entirely - giving Cagliari a throw-in.
29' Bastoni plays a good ball into the penalty area with Cagliari’s defence scrambling but Altare does just enough to edge in front of Martinez to clear the danger.
27' Inter have won eight of their last 10 league games against Cagliari (D1 L1), keeping a clean sheet in the last two.
I. Perišić
Assist
25' Perisic's inch-perfect delivery is the assist for Darmian's goal.
M. Darmian
Goal
25' INTER TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! Perisic drives towards the byline and curls a lovely cross to the far post for Darmian, who rises high above Lykogiannis to head it back across Cragno and beat the goalkeeper!
23' ANOTHER CLOSE CALL! Calhanoglu’s corner from the left is met with a flick-on by Martinez - which puts the ball to the back post for Skriniar. The centre-back is all alone but a half-step behind the delivery as it eventually rolls behind for a goal-kick.
21' SO CLOSE! The ball drops to Marin 20 yards from goal after a bit of head-tennis but the midfielder’s effort narrowly misses the inside of the far post!
19' Martinez finds a pocket of space and delivers a cross into the area but Cragno makes the straightforward catch to alleviate the pressure.
17' It looks as though Cagliari have changed shape, switching from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-1-2. Bellanova and Lykogiannis drop into full-back roles either side of Altare and Ceppitelli, while Dalbert steps into midfield along with Grassi and Marin. Joao Pedro and Pavoletti remain the strike-partnership - with Rog just behind them.
15' Bastoni crosses it into the penalty area from the left but Martinez is beaten in the air by Altare - who clears it away powerfully.
13' Calhanoglu switches play with a free-kick from the right but Cagliari’s organised block forces Perisic to turn back and pass it to De Vrij.
11' INTER SCORE BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Calhanoglu’s free-kick is nodded on at the near post, flashing it across the face of goal to Skriniar waiting at the back. The centre-back turns his first effort off the post before bundling in the rebound but after a VAR review - the goal won’t stand as there was an offside by the Inter defender before the ball crossed the line!
9' ONE-HANDED SAVE! The ball breaks kindly to Lykogiannis on the edge of Inter’s penalty area and the wing-back meets it with a powerful strike that forces Handanovic into a diving one-fisted block in order to keep the score level!
7' Darmian is called for a sliding tackle that brings Rog to the pitch just inside Inter’s half.
5' It’s been a physical start to the match, with a number of challenges flying in. With Cagliari desperate to stay in the league and Inter determined to keep pace with Milan, it’s going to be a nip and tuck 90 minutes of football.
3' GREAT SAVE! Perisic drives towards the penalty area and fires a left-footed effort low to the goalkeeper’s left - forcing Cragno into a fantastic diving parry.
1' Cagliari get the match underway from the kick-off!
Inter make three changes to the line-up that beat Empoli 4-2 last weekend. Bastoni reprises his role in defence ahead of Dimarco while Darmian is preferred to Dumfries at wing-back. The final switch is in attack, where Dzeko is preferred to Correa.
Cagliari make two changes to the XI that earned a 1-1 draw with Salernitana last time out. Dalbert is in for Lovato in defence while Marin replaces Deiola in midfield.
INTER SUBS: Denzel Dumfries, Roberto Gagliardini, Alexis Sanchez, Andrea Ranocchia, Robin Gosens, Joaquin Correa, Alex Cordaz, Arturo Vidal, Federico Dimarco, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Felipe Caicedo, Ionut Radu.
INTER XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Ivan Perisic; Edin Dzkeo, Lautaro Martinez.
CAGLIARI SUBS: Keita, Daniele Baselli, Gaston Pereiro, Kevin Strootman, Andrea Carboni, Sebastian Walukiewicz, Zito, Matteo Lovato, Nahitan Nandez, Gabriele Zappa, Simone Aresti, Alessandro Deiola.
CAGLIARI XI (3-5-2): Alessio Cragno; Dalbert, Giorgio Altare, Luca Ceppitelli; Charalampos Lykogiannis, Marko Rog, Alberto Grassi, Razvan Marin, Raoul Bellanova; Joao Pedro, Leonardo Pavoletti.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Milan’s win earlier in the day leaves Inter with their back to the wall with just two games left. A win for the Nerazzurri would see them cut the deficit back to two points - with a home match against Sampdoria to close out the campaign. Should Simone Inzaghi’s side fail to claim a victory this evening - cross-town rivals Milan will win the Scudetto with a game to spare.
Salernitana’s draw yesterday with Empoli means that Cagliari have a chance of exiting the relegation zone with a win today. Two points behind the Granata, time is running out for the Sardenians - who today face the monumental task of upending the incumbent champions ahead of a clash with already relegated Venezia next week in their bid to stave off relegation for the first time since 2015/16.
