'Get to f*ck!' - Wrexham striker Paul Mullin's beef with ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy explained - and why it involves his boots

Mullin was irritated by Murphy's criticism in the wake of a controversial incident which saw Wrexham's talisman ticked off by his own club after using the Racecourse Ground as a backdrop for a new pair of boots with the message 'F*** THE TORIES' emblazoned upon them.

The club quickly distanced themselves from their top scorer's anti-government message, prohibiting him from wearing the boots and admonishing Mullin for failing to ask for permission to use the stadium in photos. While the Liverpudlian took Wrexham's punishment on the chin he had less time for the criticism that came from Murphy on radio station talkSPORT.

"The thing that pissed me off the most during that whole time," writes Mullin in My Wrexham Story, "was the attitude of the talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy, who you’d think would know better having actually played for Liverpool.

"His view was that I didn’t play in a high enough league to have political messages on the sides of my boots. So basically, according to him, your position in life is what entitles you to have an opinion about the government. Which sums it all up perfectly – what a classic Tory thing to say that is!

"On face value, according to Danny the lower down you are in this world the less your voice matters. I’m sorry, but get to f**k. Every single person in this country has a say. It doesn’t matter who you are, what job you have, what life you lead, what anything – you’ve got an opinion like everyone else, and you can voice it.

"If Danny Murphy wants to suck up to Tories that’s up to him. In my opinion – and, yes, I am allowed one – he made himself look a clown. I actually wanted to ring talkSPORT and have it out with him, but I held back. When people think like that, what’s the point?"

Proud of his working-class Liverpool upbringing, Mullin is well known for his strident political views. Elsewhere in his autobiography he revealed his annoyance at a visit to the Racecourse from King Charles III and outlined his opposition to the monarchy.

Wrexham face Yeovil Town in the FA Cup second round this Sunday. The Dragons will be hoping to secure passage to the third round and the prospect of a draw against a Premier League side which would no doubt be selected for live TV coverage and a potential trip to the Racecourse Ground for Mullin's least favourite pundit.
