Waste of time? USMNT star Gio Reyna sees Nottingham Forest departure confirmed after forgettable 230-minute loan spell in the Premier League

  • Moved to England in winter window
  • Took in just two top-flight starts
  • Will return to Germany after Copa
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international had several destinations to mull over during the winter transfer window when an exit door swung open at Borussia Dortmund. After being linked with teams in Spain and Italy, the 21-year-old playmaker opted to head for England.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There were high hopes for Reyna at the City Ground, but he found himself thrust into a relegation battle. With Forest unable to take any risks, with a top-flight standing on the line, faith was shown in proven performers such as Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

  • WHAT FOREST SAID

That left Reyna kicking his heels on the sidelines for long periods, with only two Premier League starts enjoyed – and 10 appearances in total across all competitions. Forest have said in a statement on the club’s official website when announcing who will be leaving Trentside this summer: “The club can confirm that Gio Reyna, Divock Origi, Nuno Tavares, Gonzalo Montiel and Rodrigo Ribeiro have reached the end of their loan spells. Nottingham Forest would like to thank each player for their contribution during their time at The City Ground, and wishes them well for the future.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR REYNA?

Dortmund made a point of extending Reyna’s contract before sanctioning his move to Nottingham, meaning that a slate could be wiped clean in Germany. He has international action at the Copa America to take in prior to that, with that competition set to put the talented midfielder back in the shop window.
