Vancouver Whitecaps launch Black History month kit in collaboration with Anthony Joseph

The Vancouver Whitecaps have announced a special edition kit in celebration of Black History Month.

The kit will be worn for the team’s final two pre-season games against FC LNZ Cherkasy and IF Brommapojkarna, and also for their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round One matchup. The Vancouver Whitecaps face Costa Rica’s Deportivo Saprissa in the second leg and the club’s statement confirmed that the squad will be wearing the special Black History Month kit.

“Black heritage is deeply ingrained in the history of this club, throughout our alumni, staff, fans, partners, and media,” said Tosaint Ricketts, former Whitecaps FC player and current liaison of player and club engagement. “This is a time to recognize and celebrate those contributions, and we couldn’t be prouder to work with Anthony to bring this connection to life.”

The kit pays homage to both African heritage and the Black community, and thus it’s color palette includes traditional pan-African colors (red, green, black, and yellow). Not only that, the special kit features the quote “Black History, Canadian History” by Jean Augustine on the neckline.

The jersey showcases Joseph’s work, a local artist is known for immersing his work that reflects both his own heritage and his culture’s heritage as well.

“It’s been incredible to work with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on this project,” said Joseph. "With no restrictions, I could go all in on my jersey designs to create visuals that symbolize unity, pride, and a celebration of Black culture. I hope it inspires open dialogue and brings communities together.”

The Vancouver Whitecaps lost the first of their last two pre-season friendlies to FC LNZ Cherkasy in a closely fought 3-2 contest and face IF Brommapojkarna next. That is less than days before the first game of their MLS season kicks off, with an away clash against the Portland Timbers. The Village Caps enjoyed an inconsistent 2024 season, winning the Canadian Championship but losing out to LAFC in the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

That was despite finishing 9th in the Western Conference and fans will be hoping for an improvement as the club have signed former Southampton star Stuart Armstrong. He is joined by Jayden Nelson and Edier Ocampo as the team and manager Vanni Sartini hope to change their fate.
