USWNT star Sophia Smith makes Forbes 30 under 30 list after breakout World Cup and prolific NWSL season for Portland Thorns

    WHAT HAPPENED?

    The 23-year-old, who won the 2023 NSWL Golden Boot with eleven goals, was included in the annual list by Forbes alongside some of the brightest talents in their respective fields.

    Smith, who became the first teenager drafted into the NWSL when Portland selected her in 2020, enjoyed an impressive season in the league and is now shaping the future of the USWNT, despite a disappointing end to their 2023 World Cup campaign on penalties to Sweden.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Forbes included 30 people they believe to be helping to shape the future of their respective areas, with Smith making the cut as a representative of women's soccer following her performances for both club and country.

    Other names across women's sports included: Jessica Pegula (tennis), Kate Douglass (swimmer), Olivia Duane (gymnast) and Diana Flores (flag football).

    The Portland Thorns were knocked out of the NWSL postseason in the semifinal round by Gotham FC, but Smith was able to make a lasting impression. She led the league with 11 goals in 16 appearances and also recorded five assists, which earned her a place in the prestigious NWSL Best XI.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SMITH?

    Smith will now shift her attention to the USWNT as they prepare to face China in back-to-back friendlies on December 2 and December 6. Despite only being 23-years-old, Smith already has 36 international caps to her name, and has netted a total of 14 goals.
