USMNT star Brenden Aaronson can’t ‘press a button & be the hero’ at Leeds after boos, dramatic goal & big miss on Elland Road return

The United States international was among those to sever ties with the Whites following their relegation out of the Premier League in 2023. Aaronson spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Union Berlin, but is now back with his parent club.

The 23-year-old should have plenty to offer, given that he has graced the Champions League and World Cup, but is still in the process of trying to win over a fan base that is yet to see his best. There were boos from some at Elland Road when Aaronson stepped off the bench in a dramatic 2024-25 opener against Portsmouth.

Aaronson salvaged a point for Leeds in a 3-3 draw, as he scored in the 95th minute, but he also missed a glaring opportunity to deliver a win with virtually the last kick of the game. Whites boss Daniel Farke told reporters afterwards of how he handled the American’s disappointment and the many challenges that he still faces: "Just a hug from me. No words are needed. Most disappointed lad in the dressing room. Back from his loan. Wants to prove his worth. Some mistakes.

"Could have been the hero. Normally a player of his quality scores this and everyone sings his name. Cannot press a button and be the hero again. Takes time to win the crowd back and be trusted. Take the positives out of your first goal in first game back and there will be more moments from here in the future. Hero of one point. No accusations from my side. Compliment for work rate and first goal."

Aaronson registered only one goal through 40 appearances during his debut campaign at Leeds, with fellow countrymen Tyler Adams and Weston McKennine also failing to inspire the Whites – who started their relegation season with Jesse Marsch at the helm. Aaronson is fully committed to the cause again and will be hoping to figure prominently as Farke’s side look to piece together another promotion push.
