USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner apologises for performance in 5-1 Colombia mauling as Copa America hosts are advised to ‘look in the mirror’

Turner has held his hands up after the USMNT conceded five goals in a single home game for the first time since the 2009 Gold Cup final defeat to Mexico. In-form Colombia scored three times in the final 15 minutes to leave Gregg Berhalter's team with questions to answer ahead of this month's Copa America.

Turner spoke to TNT Sports following the defeat: "Obviously disappointed in the way we played, the way I played. Everybody needs to look in the mirror after that game and figure it out because obviously that’s not the level that’s required to compete. We can’t get too hung up, we have a game in another couple of days. And it’s important for us to be able to respond. When you look forward to tournaments, it’s not always going to be perfect, and you have to figure out the ways to get the job done. Today we didn’t have any answers for the way Colombia changed themselves, changed the way they pressed. And they just had a different intensity about them that we didn’t have for the game. So it’s really, really disappointing in front of such a great crowd to perform like that, so I want to apologise to the fans as well, because that’s not what we’re about and we need to bounce back in a big way.”

The defeat comes as the USA are preparing to host this summer's Copa America, which gets underway on June 20. Berhalter's men will face Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia in their group, with this latest defeat seeing them fall significantly short against strong opposition once again.

Turner and company cannot afford to lick their wounds for long, as they face the daunting task of completing their Copa America preparations with a friendly against Brazil in Orlando on Wednesday. Their tournament then gets underway on June 23 when they face Bolivia at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium in Texas.
