The Blues found themselves trailing by two goals by half-time at the Amex with Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh getting on the scoresheet. The Gambian footballer completed his brace after the hour mark to make it 3-0 and pile further misery on a struggling Chelsea defence.
Getty Images SportChelsea fans were furious to see their team fall apart like a pack of cards against the Seagulls and much of their ire was directed against Maresca who has failed to turn around the fortunes after taking over from Mauricio Pochettino last summer.
A fuming @CFCBlueTomorrow suggested: "Sack Enzo Maresca to save our season now. Then sack the sporting directors at the end of this season. This is abysmal. Most of these players don’t care, zero fight for the shirt. CFC making Brighton look like a UCL team."
@ConnCFC wrote: "Pathetic going forward, pathetic in defence. Chelsea football club everybody."
Whereas a distraught @KojoWud1 wrote: "I hate the fact that I can’t stop supporting Chelsea despite the sh*t they’re putting me through."
@BigAngeEra criticised Chelsea's defence and wrote: "This Chelsea downfall is unbelievable, what's happened to them...That defending is hilariously bad."
Meanwhile, @Chelsea_2580 wrote: "Chelsea is not a serious club, bunch of average conference kids...I don't recognize my Club anymore. PATHETIC."
@charliepatrick0 reported: "Chelsea booed off at halftime. Unacceptable performance and completely embarrassing. Ownership and directors have absolutely ruined this club. Over a billion spent and this is what we have to show for it!"
Manchester United legend Gary Neville lavished praise on Brighton and said: "It is a brilliant, brilliant first half from Brighton, when you consider where they were in their last Premier League game (Lost 7-0 to Nottingham Forest). That front four have caused Chelsea loads of problems and they are a far better unit than that Chelsea front four."
Whereas, Jamie Carragher said: "They have battered Chelsea. Chelsea are appealing for a foul but I don't think there is too much in it. It just sums up the difference between the two teams. Again, Minteh goes inside Cucurella and it is awful defending. Minteh has got the potential to be a real star."
Getty Images SportChelsea have won just two of their last nine league matches. Although they still find themselves in the fourth spot, they are likely to slip out of the Champions League places after matchday 25 with Manchester City, Newcastle and Bournemouth breathing down their necks. The Blues return to action next Saturday against Aston Villa away from home in their next Premier League fixture.
