  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former United striker claimed that he is "still not convinced" with Hojlund's performance at Old Trafford as he feels the Danish attacker needs to be more consistent. After a difficult start to his journey with the Red Devils, the youngster enjoyed an upturn in form at the turn of the year. In 2024, the player has scored in five appearances, and has 15 goal contributions to his name from 31 appearances for United across the entire season.

  • WHAT DWIGHT YORKE SAID

Speaking to talkSPORT, Yorke said: "I think optimistic is probably the right word at this moment in time. When you go to United and you get off to a very bad start, which he did, you just question whether he’s ever going to return [the goals]. He’s young, he’s playing in a team that is struggling and is inconsistent, so it’s very difficult circumstances for him to come into, especially with such a big price tag.

"That’s a lot to ask of a young man. But with a bit of perseverance, he’s showing signs. He’s still not convincing enough for me at the moment but I’m happy that he’s at least got some goals."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gareth Southgate was linked with a move to Old Trafford earlier this month but Yorke feels that the England manager's lack of trophies with the Three Lions could be a "stumbling block" for him to potentially replace Erik ten Hag at the helm.

He added: "I know Gareth very well, we played together at Aston Villa and he was my captain. We all know the journey he’s had. There’s always that question mark with international managers. People talk about his success with England and I suppose it is success if you get to a final and a semi-final but he hasn’t won anything major.

"I think that’s the one stumbling thing. We all know club management and international management are two totally different things as well. His club record isn’t particularly great, he’s gained a lot of experience since then but, for me, I think that’s a question mark. But I can see why they want him at United, for sure."
