The Red Dragons are yet to secure their place in the second tier of English football for 2025-26. They are, however, filling an automatic promotion spot in League One as they look to take a historic third successive step up the EFL ladder.
GettyHollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made no secret of the fact that they want to bring top-flight football to North Wales. They are prepared to welcome more investors on board while taking aim at that ambitious target.
With big money continuing to be spent, ex-Wales international Savage - who is a Wrexham native - believes the Red Dragons can push towards the Promised Land. He does have the odd concern regarding their style of football under Phil Parkinson, but admits anything is possible.
GettySavage has told BBC 606: “Wycombe, I think, are now a point behind Wrexham. I’ve seen both teams play. To be fair, Wycombe and Wrexham, I can’t believe both are up there. They’ve done amazingly well to be up there. I think there’s better teams over the course of the season, but they’re there on merit.
“Listen, I’ve watched all the teams in League One, there’s some very, very good sides. You’ve got to say, Wrexham play their way, and they do it really, really well and are effective. I like Wrexham, I like them, but they didn’t play well against Reading when I went to see them. A young Reading side dominated Wrexham.
“Out of all those teams, I hope Wrexham finish second, I really do. They’d have a chance in the Championship, they would, with the owners, with what they can bring in. I think they’d be looking at play-offs. Honestly, they can bring in the players. Look at the size of the club now, they’re flying!”
Savage, whose son Charlie plays for Reading in League One, added: “When I watched Wrexham against Reading, I was so disappointed with them. It was the first time I’d seen them live this season. I want Wrexham to go up in second place. I really, really do. It’d be brilliant for the town and the community, I think it would be absolutely fantastic.
“But when I watched them, it was like, ‘let’s stay in the game for 60 minutes and if it’s not going that well, let’s bring on [Steven] Fletcher, let’s get the balls in the box and try and nick a goal in the last half hour of the game’.
“Listen, Phil Parkinson does it really, really well, they’re second in the league and he’s done unbelievable. They’ve got a way of playing, and it suits them really, really well. I’m just being honest and, listen, if I had players like that, I’d play that way.”
Getty/FXQuestions have been asked of Parkinson’s playing style, but he boasts the full support of Reynolds and McElhenney. They are hoping to see another promotion-winning party figure prominently on Season 4 of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which will be airing on FX from May 15.
