Prior to the two victories in the past two matches, Bucs had managed to score only 10 goals in 15 fixtures in the league. Now they have 17 goals from 17 games. GOAL takes a look at the seven goals to assess whether there was potential influence from Chickelday on the training ground.

Big improvement

It was a brilliant first touch, a quick turn and an instinctive finish in Sundays’ game against Stellenbosch. The kind of move which tends to come without thinking too much and could well be a result of repetition of finishing drills on the training ground; Erasmus exhibited excellent sharpness.

Ndlondlo’s well-taken strike from the edge of the area is the kind of effort midfield players often take when doing shooting drills and are usually encouraged to find the bottom corner – which he did in textbook style.

Monare scored with a well-executed header from a Monnapule Saleng free kick. One would like to think free kicks are something practiced a lot on the training ground.

Maela’s goal vs Stellies was not something which could be trained for as it came about from a mistake in the visitors’ defence. The defender did, however, take his shot with a lot of conviction.

Going back to the match against Arrows, Saleng opened the scoring with a clever flick at the near-post. It also looked like something which may have been practiced – a typical low cross from the winger/ wing-back (Bandile Shandu) and a late darting run to the near post.

The Zimbabwean rarely gets on the score-sheet but took this one superbly – it looked like he’s been working on headers on the training ground as he nodded in Saleng’s cross with authority.

Terrence Dzvukamanja 

An added time goal, the ball broke kindly to Pule via a deflection. His cool and composed finish did however hint at a player who has been in those sort of positions – one-on-one with the keeper – recently on the training ground.

Vincent Pule 

Both Arrows and Stellenbosch have been plumetting down the standings over the past month and so it was a good time for Bucs to meet them. Tougher, more pressured games are ahead, and these will give us a clearer picture as to whether Pirates are really improving in front of goal.
