Niamh Charles signs new long-term Chelsea contract as Lionesses star provides Blues with huge boost ahead of Emma Hayes exit for USWNT

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Since the England international joined Chelsea from Liverpool in the summer of 2020, she has been a significant contributor to the team's success under the leadership of Emma Hayes, who is set to leave the Blues for the USWNT at the end of the current campaign. Charles had earlier signed an extension ahead of the 2022/23 campaign that extended her commitment to the club until the summer of 2025 and the fresh deal further emphasises her commitment to the club.

    Speaking to the official club media after extending her contract, Charles said: "I’m really happy and grateful. I’ve had a good few years here. I’ve developed a lot and I’m really looking forward to the future and what the next few years hold."

    Charles has re-invented herself as a left-back this season under the guidance of Hayes. She has been so impressive in her new role that Sarina Wiegamn, the England women's team boss, has also deployed her as a full-back in the international arena. She surges forward at every given opportunity since she used to play in attack, as a winger or as a No.10, and her accurate acrosses have been an asset to Hayes.

    Chelsea are the league leaders and Charles would like to ensure that they end the campaign in pole position which would be an incredible parting gift to Hayes. They will be back in action against Manchester United in a blockbuster WSL fixture on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
