Mary Earps, Lucy Bronze and the Lionesses who could be on the move in the summer transfer window

There's no major tournament for the Lionesses to contend with this summer, but it looks like it'll still be a busy time for a number of England stars, with a whole host nearing the end of their current contracts at club level. No fewer than seven players that Sarina Wiegman has called upon in recent times are on deals set to expire in the coming weeks, with a few others simply attracting interest ahead of the transfer window.

In the last couple of years, the Lionesses have made sure to get any contracts and transfers sorted before joining up with the England squad for a big tournament. Whether things will be wrapped up as swiftly this year, we'll see. Wiegman won't be taking a team to the Olympics but there is qualifying for the Euros to contend with in June and July.

So, which England players could be on the move this summer? GOAL takes a look...

  • Mary Earps Man Utd Women 2023-24Getty

    Mary Earps (Man Utd)

One of seven players on this list whose current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, Mary Earps has been the subject of transfer speculation for the best part of a year. Arsenal were keen on the Manchester United shot-stopper last summer, but a deal was never done and she has not yet negotiated a new contract with the Red Devils either.

At one point, it looked certain that Earps would move on. That doesn't seem to be the case now, and United appear to have a chance at keeping one of the best goalkeepers in the world. However, there will be clubs monitoring the situation closely, with the opportunity to add a player of Earps' quality sure to be of interest to many.

  • Lucy Bronze Barcelona 2023-24Getty

    Lucy Bronze (Barcelona)

Also set to become a free agent this summer, Lucy Bronze is another who seems as likely to stay at her current club as she is to leave. A few months ago, reports suggested that Barcelona were not prioritising her renewal, especially with several key players in need of new deals and there financial regulations to comply with. However, ARA has since written that the club wants to offer Bronze a one-year extension with the option for another year, if she agrees to a small pay cut. Crucially, the England star is also keen on staying.

However, there are a number of factors for her to consider, particularly when it comes to playing time, with Ona Batlle becoming Barca's first-choice right-back. Bronze has always been a player who enjoys a new challenge, too, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see her leave Catalunya to try something different.

  • Ellie Roebuck Man City Women 2022-23Getty

    Ellie Roebuck (Man City)

It could be a case of one Lioness out and another in at Barca then, as all signs point to Ellie Roebuck joining the Catalans on a free transfer from Manchester City. The goalkeeper hasn't played a single minute for the club this season, which led to her dropping out of the England squad before the 24-year-old recently revealed she had suffered a type of stroke.

Before Roebuck shared that news, rumours had already been swirling of interest from Barca and they have not gone away, with The Athletic reporting just last week that she has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Spanish champions. It could be the move she needs to get back into the Lionesses' picture.

  • Chloe Kelly Man City 2023-24Getty Images

    Chloe Kelly (Man City)

Roebuck isn't the only Man City star to have been linked with a move abroad, as Chloe Kelly was rumoured to be drawing interest from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season. There are doubts as to whether she could feasibly join the Parisians because of the need for a non-EU spot, but as she enters the final year of her contract, it's no surprise to see her linked with a top team.

The 26-year-old had a spell out-of-favour at City lately and that could further encourage clubs to look at the possibility of her leaving. However, she was back in the starting XI last week, with rumours surrounding her future now quiet. It's a situation worth keeping an eye on at the very least.

  • Fran Kirby Chelsea 2023-24Getty

    Fran Kirby (Chelsea)

Fran Kirby has been a key part of Chelsea's success over the past decade, but we could well see her representing a different club next season. The England playmaker is out of contract in London in the summer and Emma Hayes' impending departure only adds another layer of uncertainty to such a situation.

Kirby has struggled for fitness in recent seasons, limited by illness as well as injury, but remains one of the most talented players in the Women's Super League. There's not been much in the way of rumours on this front, either regarding clubs interested in her or progress in contract negotiations, so it is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

  • Grace Clinton Spurs Women 2023-24Getty

    Grace Clinton (Man Utd)

There was little doubt about Grace Clinton's future until a couple of weeks ago, when Tottenham head coach Robert Vilahamn expressed his desire to buy the midfielder. Clinton is on loan at Spurs from Manchester United, where she has another year on her contract, but it's no surprise that the London club would be interested in making that a permanent deal given how well she has performed for them this season.

It seems unlikely that the Red Devils would be willing to sell such a talented young player, one who looks sure to make an impact on the first team when she returns to Manchester at the end of the season. But if Vilahamn's comments are anything to go by, it sounds like Spurs are going to explore the possibility of keeping her in the capital.

  • Katie Zelem Manchester United 2023-24Getty Images

    Katie Zelem (Man Utd)

Just like their city rivals, United have a number of players out of contract this summer, one of whom is captain Katie Zelem. The 28-year-old, who started a game for England at last year's World Cup, has been a stalwart for the Red Devils since the women's team was re-established back in 2018, rarely missing a game.

In that sense, it feels likely that Zelem will stay at the club, but there hasn't been much in the way of news on her situation and there is still a contract to be negotiated before that becomes the case.

  • Nikita Parris Man Utd Women 2023-24Getty

    Nikita Parris (Man Utd)

Another Red Devil with an expiring deal, Nikita Parris' stock has certainly risen as the season has gone on, with her going on an impressive scoring spree that means her current tally for the campaign sits at 16. She’s shown what an asset she is to United then, but is still to negotiate a new contract with the club.

If she is to leave, there would surely be teams queuing up to snap up a player who has showcased her goal-scoring prowess in spades this past year. Yet, it would be a surprise for her to be let go given her performances.

  • Katie Robinson Brighton Women 2023-24Getty

    Katie Robinson (Brighton)

A player who could be on her way to Manchester United, Katie Robinson has previously had interest from the Red Devils and her contract at Brighton is up this summer. The 21-year-old has consistently been one of the Seagulls' most creative players and has earned England recognition as a result, winning her first caps under Wiegman before being chosen as part of last year's World Cup squad.

While her regular game time on the south coast has played a big role in her development, it does feel like Robinson is ready for that next step now and she is capable of adding a lot to a team further up the WSL table. There are sure to be plenty of clubs keeping tabs as the transfer window approaches.

  • Esme Morgan Manchester City 2023Getty

    Esme Morgan (Man City)

Though not a player who has necessarily been linked with a move away, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a few clubs gave Man City a call about Esme Morgan’s future this summer. A versatile defender who can play any role in that back line, she hasn't started for City since November, with game time very difficult to come by in recent months.

Morgan is a childhood City fan, she’s under contract for another year and she’s managed to keep hold of her England place despite reduced minutes at club level, so there are plenty of reasons why she may stay and fight for a bigger role. However, it would also be understandable if she looked elsewhere and, again, there are plenty of clubs who would be interested in the 23-year-old’s qualities.
