    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Following their 1-0 loss at home on Sunday, D'Aversa head-butted the Verona striker. The 48-year-old was fired by the club, who issued a statement later that day denouncing the incident. Following the incident, D'Aversa also apologized for the incident as he described the events as "inexcusable."

    Earlier today, Lecce released a statement that read: "After the events that took place at the end of the Lecce – Verona match, US Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    After their defeat on Sunday, Lecce dropped to 15th in the Italian league, two spots below Verona, and with just a one-point lead above the relegation zone. Lecce have lost nine of their previous 12 league games and has just won once in the period. Last July, they appointed D'Aversa to succeed Marco Baroni after a string of poor performances the previous season.
