    WHAT ALVAREZ'S AGENT SAID

Speaking on Spanish TV program El Chiringuito, Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, addressed growing speculation linking the 24-year-old with a move to Camp Nou. While Alvarez remains fully committed to his current club, Hidalgo made it clear that the future is open.

"The day-to-day is at Atletico," he said. "We will see how the negotiation goes. Football changes quickly. There will need to be talks between the clubs, and a deal will have to be made."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

What may give Barcelona an edge in the race to sign Alvarez is his emotional connection to the club. According to Hidalgo, the forward has long admired Barcelona, partly due to his deep respect for Lionel Messi.

"He received many calls, but Atletico want him to stay for now," he added. "He has always followed Leo Messi's career, and I don't think many Argentines grow up without a strong feeling for Barça. Julian is very grateful to many Barça players who have spoken highly of him. That motivates him a lot."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ALVAREZ?
