Hansi Flick gives green light for Barcelona to extend Inaki Pena's contract amid starring role in Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury absence

Pena was thrust into the spotlight after Barcelona captain Ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury during Barcelona's 5-1 win against Villarreal in September. Despite initial scepticism, Pena has proven himself a reliable option, delivering consistent performances in high-stakes matches including against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. While Barcelona brought in Wojciech Szczesny as an emergency signing to provide experience and cover, Hansi Flick has repeatedly expressed confidence in Pena as the club's No. 1 goalkeeper.

Pena’s current contract, which was renewed in May 2023, runs until the summer of 2026 and includes a hefty €400 million release clause. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s management, including sporting director Deco and Flick, are united in their decision to offer the goalkeeper a new deal at an opportune time.

Having joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy at a young age, Pena’s journey to becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper highlights his resilience and perseverance. In 17 appearances across competitions this season, he has let in 19 goals and kept six clean sheets.

As Barcelona prepare to face Leganes on Sunday, they will aim to maintain their position at the top of the La Liga standings. They hold a two-point advantage over Real Madrid but have played a match more than their arch-rivals.
