Fans bizarrely throw trainers onto pitch during Euro 2024 clash as Donyell Malen forced to avoid footwear while scoring for Netherlands

The Borussia Dortmund forward scored twice in the match while Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the first half to guide the Netherlands to a comfortable 3-0 win over Romania in their Euro 2024 round of 16 clash. However, Malen had to experience a bizarre incident during the tie as he saw a shoe being thrown in his direction while he was on his way to score the team's third goal. Romania goalkeeper Florian Nita was forced to boot the footwear off the pitch after his goal.

After a series of underwhelming performances in the group stage that saw them finish third behind Austria and France, the Dutch drastically improved their game in the knockout stage. They will now feature in the quarter-final of the European Championship for the first time since 2008.

With his opening goal, Liverpool star Gakpo is now among the top goalscorers in the competition this year. He is tied on three goals along with Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala and Ivan Schranz.

Ronaldo Koeman's side will now face the winner of the round of 16 clash between Austria and Turkey in the last-eight stage on Saturday night.
