Explained: Why Burnley had to evacuate hundreds of fans at Turf Moor during Premier League draw with Wolves

Burnley took on Wolves in a crunch clash for their Premier League survival on Tuesday, but some spectators were forced to end their viewing from the ground early. One section of Turf Moor, specifically the Jimmy McIlroy stand, had its fans evacuated by stewards and police amid an ongoing safety issue. The Sun notes that some supporters were then taken to the club's Fan Zone to watch the rest of the match, while @TurfCastPodcast on X reports that others were moved to the lower tier.

The reason for said evacuation was due to a dangerously hanging piece of metal in the roof of the Jimmy McIllroy stand. Cladding in the area had come loose during the opening stages, leading to concerns over the safety of fans. As a result, they were moved away from the danger area, with the metal still dangling as the match continued.

The Clarets released a statement mid-game explaining the situation: "Burnley fans are in the process of being moved from a section of the Jimmy McIlroy stand due to current safety concerns with the roof. We thank supporters for their co-operation and patience while we do this."

Despite some being moved elsewhere, Burnley fans on the whole will have been happy with what they saw on Tuesday night. Jacob Bruun Larsen put the home side in front on 37 minutes only for Rayan Ait-Nouri to equalise in first-half stoppage time. The Clarets pushed for a winner but in the end had to settle for their seventh draw of the season, leaving them 19th as Wolves stay in tenth.

It wasn't a perfect result for Vincent Kompany's side but it was far from a disaster, as they extend their unbeaten run in the league to four games (1W, 3D). That 1-1 draw puts them six points off safety after 17th-placed Nottingham Forest picked up a vital 3-1 victory over Fulham on the same evening.
