  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley was in charge of the Three Lions for the first time over the weekend as they defeated his former international side, Republic of Ireland, 2-0. Speculation has continued to rage over his future, however, since taking over from Gareth Southgate on a temporary basis, although he maintains he is simply in charge of the next three international camps.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate got the job in very similar circumstances, having initially started as a caretaker after Sam Allardyce's sacking. Carsley will also oversee fixtures against Greece and Finland in October, before they then play Greece and Ireland in November.

  • WHAT CARSLEY SAID

Carsley told reporters: "I think it's quite clear I am doing the three camps. I'm really happy with that, if it changes also I'm happy with that. I'm very privileged in the position I'm in, in terms of the Under 21s. I have enjoyed it so far. The important thing is the team as opposed to the coaches - they should be the ones in the spotlight and getting the attention."
