Edson Alvarez set to leave West Ham for Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce as Ajax drop bid to bring Mexico star back to Amsterdam

Even though West Ham were willing to agree to a loan move for the Mexican, Ajax still fell short of matching the financial terms of the deal. Fenerbahce were quick to sweep in and have reportedly reached an agreement on the purchase fee for the midfielder next season, according to ESPN. The negotiations are underway, and the Fenerbahce camp are expected to have Alvarez's signing wrapped up quickly.

Ajax's poor sporting performance and the loss of revenue from Europe are causing hurdles in their transfer activity. The Eredivisie club are witnessing a significant decline in its turnover amid reduced transfer income, high wages, and transfer spending in previous years. The Dutch side were not able to match Alvarez's €6m salary cap and found even the bare loan amount unfeasible, and had to pull out of the deal.

Alvarez was signed by West Ham in 2023 from Ajax on a five-year contract. The midfielder started as an integral part of the system under former manager David Moyes and has since played 73 games for the club, in which he has scored two goals and registered three assists. The player has also been influential for the Mexican national team and has led his side to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2023 and the CONCACAF Nations League in 2025.

The 2023 Gold Cup Player of the Tournament has not been able to find regular minutes under coach Graham Potter, and this is a cause for concern as the player captains the Mexico national team and can lose his leadership role if he does not get proper playing time before the World Cup next year.
