  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Inter Miami assembled a star-studded squad ahead of the 2024 season of Major League Soccer with Uruguay icon Luis Suarez joining his former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. While the Herons did win the MLS Supporters' Shield for the first time in the club's history, they faltered in round one of the MLS Cup play-off, losing two out of their three games against Atlanta United.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The David Beckham co-owned side's failure to win the MLS Cup despite having a very strong roster including the world's best player Messi, has garnered a lot of criticism and former USA international Gomez was the latest pundit to join the bandwagon as he took a brutal dig at the Argentina skipper.

  • WHAT HERCULEZ GOMEZ SAID

Speaking on ESPN’s Futbol Americas podcast, Gomez said: "Inter Miami has the best player of all time on their roster, who by the way is league MVP. They gave you keys of the kingdom, not to bow out in three games to Atlanta United, to a 9th place team, to Rob Valentino who no longer was the team interim coach at Atlanta United. In three games, they couldn’t beat Brad Guzan."

The ex-La Galaxy star added: "It’s one of the biggest failures in MLS’ history and you damn well know. Every exec Don Garber, whatever hair he had on top of his head was pulling it out, you had one job. It’s one of the biggest failures I’ve seen in North American sports in quite some time."
