Ben Foster backs 'very clever' Rob McElhenney & 'laid back' Ryan Reynolds to guide Wrexham to the Premier League by 2030

Foster knows McElhenney and Reynolds well after coming out of retirement to play for Wrexham. The former stopper joined on a free transfer and helped Wrexham win the National League in 2023, securing promotion to League Two. He retired for a second time the following season but has gone on to see the Red Dragons make it into League One, where they currently sit in second place, level on points with leaders Wycombe.

Wrexham's ultimate ambition is to make it all the way to the Premier League and play in the English top flight alongside the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Another promotion this season would put Wrexham in the Championship, just one league below the Premier League, and Foster thinks the Welsh club will achieve their aims in the coming years under the stewardship of Reynolds and McElhenney.

Foster told Will Brazier in an interview on YouTube: "It's lovely because they're so sound. It's exactly what you see in the documentary. I think I’d have been a little bit disappointed if, when I got to meet them, they were completely different, or they were whoppers. But they're not, they're just like normal people. You can see Rob is very clever, and he's very driven. Ryan is just so laid back and calm, and it's almost like he gets embarrassed by the fame. He doesn't really like the spotlight so much. They're such nice people, and they really care about the club. They really care about the community, and it wouldn't surprise me if you see them in the Premier League in five or six years' time.”

Wrexham will aim to maintain their promotion push next time out when they take on struggling Cambridge United at the SToK Racecourse on Saturday.
