Barcelona midfielder Gavi 'sad' over possible knee surgery but Spain boss assures youngster he'll 'emerge stronger' amid fears of long absence

Gavi is once again facing the possibility of surgery after feeling fresh pain in his right knee following a knock in training. It’s the same knee he injured in 2023 when he tore his ACL and meniscus, an issue that kept him sidelined for almost a year. While Barcelona’s medical staff are trying conservative treatment first, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente admitted that surgery is on the 21-year-old's mind. After speaking directly with the midfielder, he revealed that Gavi is 'sad' as he waits to learn whether another long spell on the sidelines is ahead of him.

Gavi, who is considered one of the prodigies from La Masia, has seen injuries slow down his progress. Since returning from his ACL layoff, he has featured in 42 matches but managed only 14 starts in La Liga and three in the Champions League. This season, he has yet to start a game, coming off the bench twice and providing a single assist.

At just 21, he remains one of Barcelona and Spain’s brightest young prospects, but the repeated injury setbacks are becoming a real concern for the young midfielder. 

Speaking on El Larguero, De la Fuente admitted the situation has been tough on Gavi but insisted the youngster has the strength to deal with it. 

"I spoke this morning with Gavi. He is sad and awaiting a possible meniscus surgery," Spain boss revealed. "He is very strong… I encouraged him because these are the situations where one comes out stronger."

Barcelona return to action after the international break with their first home game of the season against Valencia on September 14. Losing Gavi for that clash would be another blow, particularly with Alejandro Balde also sidelined with a hamstring injury. There are also injury concerns over Lamine Yamal and Frenkie de Jong. With several key players under doubt, the defending La Liga champions face an anxious wait heading into important fixtures.
