Alfredo Morelos faces Santos contract termination following ex-Rangers star's drink driving arrest in Colombia

The Atletico Nacional loanee was reportedly driving under the influence and then arrested following a collision between his Chevrolet and a motorbike earlier this week.

The Antioquia traffic and transportation section said: “Alfredo Jose Morelos Aviles, a forward for the Atlético Nacional club, was arrested. He was driving a pickup truck, causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence of alcohol (Grade 2), resulting in personal injuries to Sebastian Guillermo Davila Valderrama.”

Now, according to Esportes, his parent club Santos are 'exploring their options' over releasing the 28-year-old from his contract - which ends next summer.

Photos have since emerged of the badly damaged motorbike wedged under what is reportedly Morelos' vehicle. He allegedly faces a fine of around £4,000, plus community service, and he is also likely to have his driving licence suspended. Morelos was also banished from his side's squad for their Colombian Cup quarter-final second leg against Jaguares - which they won 2-1 on Thursday. If he was released, this would be a big setback in his career.

Morelos had six seasons with Scottish giants Rangers, between 2017-2023, before signing for Santos. He scored 124 goals in 269 games for the Gers but has had less luck at the Brazilian outfit, getting on the scoresheet on just four occasions in 20 appearances. He has, however, scored seven goals in 11 games for Atletico this season.

Morelos will wait to see what his fate will be in the coming days and weeks. Incidentally, Santos reportedly have a trigger in their contract that states anyone who damages the club's reputation will be subject to administrative sanctions.
