AC Milan & Inter reach historic deal to buy San Siro but Serie A giants given warning for new stadium ahead of European Championships

The city's mayor announced that he had reached an agreement with Inter and Milan regarding San Siro. The mayor spoke on Tuesday on RTL 102.5, confirming the sale of the historic stadium to the two clubs. This is a necessary step for the subsequent works, which will allow for the creation of a new stadium owned by the clubs.

In March, Milan and Inter formally submitted a joint proposal to the Municipality of Milan, seeking full control over San Siro and the surrounding area. The iconic stadium, long shared by the two clubs, could soon be replaced, as both sides have pushed forward with plans to construct a new venue adjacent to the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Sala confirmed that they have received the proposal at the time. According to reports, construction on the new stadium is set to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2030. 

Back in October 2024, the Italian Tax Office valued the stadium and its surrounding land at approximately €200 million. The new stadium is expected to hold around 71,500 spectators, including 13,000 seats designated for corporate and hospitality purposes. The project will require an investment exceeding €1bn and will be built on the area currently occupied by parking lots behind the west stand of the Meazza. The sale of the San Siro area is necessary for the construction of a new stadium that will be managed entirely by Inter and Milan.

"If all goes well, tomorrow we should go to the council with the resolution to sell San Siro because we have reached an agreement with the clubs," Sala announced. 

"There will be a proposal on the project, then we will pass the sale of such important assets on to the City Council. First there will be committees and discussions, and then we will have to come up with a yes or no. I want to have a clear conscience, so I will bring the resolution to the council and support its approval. I will vote in favour, and then the city council will decide. Everything will happen by the end of the month.

"[The new stadium] must be ready by 2031, because UEFA is telling us that they will not consider Milan for the 2032 European Championship if San Siro remains."

Now, as announced by the mayor, the resolution for the sale of San Siro and the surrounding areas will be submitted to the council and then to the municipal council. Subsequently, if approved, the process will begin for the demolition of the current facility and the construction of a new, more modern stadium. Inter and Milan will therefore continue to play their home matches in the same stadium, which will still be located in the San Siro area.
