Video highlights: Socceroos sunk by lucky France in World Cup opener

The Socceroos have fallen painfully short against France, as they were handed an unfortunate 2-1 loss in Kazan to begin their 2018 World Cup campaign.

France were the strong favourites heading in and started the match strongly with Australian goalkeeper Maty Ryan forced into four routine saves inside the first 10 minutes.

After a shaky start, the Socceroos found their feet with an Aaron Mooy free-kick in the 18th minute deflecting off a French defender and forcing Hugo Lloris into a diving save.

A strong defensive display from Australia and a lack of clear intent from France saw the scores locked at 0-0 at halftime.

It was much the same in the second half until VAR awarded its first World Cup penalty as Antoine Griezmann won and buried a penalty after being controversially clipped by Josh Risdon.

Not five minutes later, the Socceroos would be level however as Mile Jedinak slotted home a spot kick after a handball from Samuel Umtiti.

Luck however was on France's side as a Paul Pogba strike was ruled to have past the goal-line in the 80th minute to secure France a 2-1 win.
