The current generation of fans are used to seeing Ikhsan Fandi lead the line for Singapore’s national team these days. However, it must be said that over the years, Singapore has been blessed with a number of talented strikers.
One such player was Noh Alam Shah whose no holds-barred style of play made him an endearing figure in the hearts of fans. He was regarded as one of the best forwards in Southeast Asia at one point of time, due to his performances in the AFF Suzuki Cup for Singapore.
In the 2007 edition of the tournament, the former striker wrote his name into the history books as he scored seven goals in an 11–0 win for Singapore against Laos in the group stage. It was a record number of goals scored by an individual player in an international game for Singapore.
He would also receive the 'Most Valuable Player' award for his superb displays in the tournament as Singapore would go on to win the competition. These days Alam Shah can be found in Fandi Ahmad’s national team set-up as he occupies a role as a mentor to the current crop of footballers.
Let’s hope the current batch of forwards learn a trick or two from him and inspire Singapore to AFF Suzuki Cup glory this year.
