The 2018 Cecafa Women’s Challenge Cup will not kick-off as was initially scheduled.
The fate of the regional tournament now hangs in the balance after host association Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) postponed the games that were scheduled to be staged in Kigali from May 12-22, 2018.
The decision to postpone the tournament was taken by Ferwafa Management, who cited lack of funds after Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) failed to remit the cash well in advance.
“With just a few days to the start of the tournament initially set for Saturday, May 12, 2018, Ferwafa has not received funds to host the tournament from Cecafa as agreed last month despite repeated correspondences and calls to Cecafa Secretariat requesting hosting funds to be availed to ensure the smooth organization of the tournament,” read part of the statement released by Ferwafa.
The Rwandan FA reiterated that they will only rescind the decision upon receipt of the funds. “At that time, both Ferwafa and Cecafa will sit to decide on the suitable dates when this tournament will be staged."
The Rwanda National Women Football Team will break off their training session and focus on their club engagements in the Women Football League which will also resume with immediate effect.
Football Kenya Federation is yet to give out any communication regarding the fate of the Harambee Starlets, who were set to grace the tournament.
