Swansea confirm Carvalhal exit following relegation

Swansea City have confirmed that they will not be extending manager Carlos Carvalhal's contract at the Liberty Stadium.

The Portuguese took charge of the Swans in December following the sacking of Paul Clement, but will not stay on as manager following their relegation from the Premier League.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins praised Carvalhal for the work he had done for the club, but is now seeking a new direction as they look to win promotion from the Championship next season.

"We’d like to put on record our thanks to Carlos for his enthusiasm, hard work and commitment since arriving at the club in December," Jenkins told the club's official website .

“Naturally, we are all disappointed with the club’s relegation from the Premier League, and following discussions with Carlos, we felt it was in the best interests of both parties that we move in a new direction.

“We will now be looking to appoint a new manager in readiness for the 2018-19 season.

“While there are already rumours linking us with several managers, it is vital that we identify the right person to take this team forward.”

Carvalhal led Swansea to a promising start after taking over after Christmas, guiding the club to wins over Arsenal and Liverpool, though they failed to maintain their momentum.

Indeed, the club's last Premier League win came in March, when they thumped West Ham 4-1. The months of April and May saw five defeats and two draws, as they slipped into the Championship.

A last-day loss to Stoke City confirmed their relegation, with the club ultimately finishing three points behind 17th-placed Southampton.
