Sunderland release Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe

The Black Cats have let go of the Nigeria international as they prepare for life in the Championship next season

Sunderland have confirmed the departure of Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe from the Stadium of Light.

The 29-year-old forward who joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion in September has been confirmed as one of the 11 players released as the club look to rebuild for life in the Championship next season.

The club, on its latest team news for next season's campaign omitted the name of the former Everton forward who has endured injuries in the past season in the list of the retained 53 players.

Anichebe made 18 starts, scoring three goals in the Premier League this season.
