Shaqiri’s reacts after missing out on Euro 2016 Goal of the Tournament vote to Gera

Xherdan Shaqiri suggests that a mass vote from Hungary fans may have influenced the decision to award the Euro 2016 Goal of the Tournament to Zoltan Gera.

The Stoke City midfielder appeared set to win the fan-nominated award with his stunning overhead kick against Poland, but Gera clinched the prize with his strike against Portugal.

UEFA’s technical observers have ranked Shaqiri’s goal as the best in the tournament, beating Hal Robson-Kanu’s individual effort against Belgium, and the Switzerland international insists his was the best.

"I'm not disappointed that my goal was not elected. But everyone knows that my goal was the most beautiful!” Shaqiri told Blick.

"Perhaps all Hungarians have voted."

The official Twitter account of Switzerland’s national team also jokingly mocked UEFA for its decision to let the fans decide.

In reply to the announcement that Gera had won, they wrote: “Some things should be just better not vote.”
