Berekum Chelsea striker Stephen Sarfo has launched a scathing attack on his critics after he was trolled on social media for his 'terrible English' spoken in an interview with Fox Sports after the Wafu Cup of Nations final on Sunday.
The 23-year-old, who formerly played for Berekum Arsenals and Wa All Stars, scored twice against Nigeria in the final to help Ghana defend the title and was named the top scorer of the tournament after taking his tally to four goals.
However, he insists that degrees attained from education don't win awards in football.
"I did not have formal education to the highest level like many people in this country because of some reasons. However, whenever I'm asked questions in English Language, I can understand but struggle to answer unless I speak my local dialect [which is Twi,]" Sarfo told Adom FM.
"I'm a footballer who is judged at the end of every season by the number goals scored or outputs in games but not the speaking of a foreign language. I don't understand why a section of Ghanaians want to take trivial issues too personal. Degrees attained from studies don't win awards in tournament, rather one's performance is what is used to select winners so I won the award through my hard work and will continue to do my best," he added.
Sarfo, however, admitted that he will consider employing a private teacher to help him become fluent in the language.
"I'm doing my work expected of me on the pitch but if the need arises and I have the strength, I will go for one," he said.
Sarfo has scored 13 goals in the 2016-17 Ghana Premier League season, tied with Hearts of Oak captain Thomas Abbey, with four matches remaining.
