The Red Devils' Carabao Cup clash against Derby County took a turn for the worse when the goalkeeper received the first red card of his career

The drama just refuses to stop around Manchester United, as Sergio Romero created the latest talking point with a red card for handling outside the area.

With the build-up to Tuesday's Carabao Cup match dominated by the talk surrounding Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba's deteriorating relationship, United were hoping for a respite on the pitch against Derby County

And the clash started in perfect fashion for the hosts when Juan Mata finished off a flowing team move after just three minutes to make it 1-0.

With Pogba watching on from the stands after being excluded from the squad, however, things started to go downhill.

Harry Wilson brought Derby back to level terms with a well-hit free kick that left Romero stranded on the hour mark, leaving the game in the balance.

And when the Man United defence failed to clear in front of their penalty area, the Argentine was forced out of his box and used his hand to stop the ball.

A red card was the only option for referee Stuart Atwell, leaving the Red Devils with 10 men.

In a curious twist of fate it was left to 35-year-old Lee Grant, United's third-choice keeper, to fill the void between the posts.

Grant made his competitive debut for the Premier League club against none other than Derby, with whom he enjoyed two spells that spanned eight years and almost 200 appearances.
