With Armas' men producing plenty of goalmouth action at both ends, Al Hain-Cole expects them to ensure an entertaining derby clash against the Pigeons

New York Red Bulls will be hoping to close the gap on neighbours New York City when the sides meet in Sunday’s big MLS derby clash.

Chris Armas’ men are a point adrift of their local rivals in the Eastern Conference, having played two more matches.

Latest odds

Having lost just once in eight previous home games against the guests, they are even money (2.00) favourites with bet365 to move ahead by coming out on top at the Red Bull Arena.

The Pigeons saw their 12-match unbeaten streak ended by Portland Timbers last time out, but are priced at 13/5 (3.60) to bounce back with a morale-boosting derby win here.

Just two of the 14 previous Hudson River Derbies have resulted in draws, but you can get odds of 5/2 (3.50) on this one finishing up all square.

Team news

Michael Murillo and Kaku are available once again following suspension, although Florian Valot remains out with an ACL injury. Bradley Wright-Phillips netted his first goal since March last time out and will hope to start against a side he has scored against 12 times.

Joe Scally, Tony Rocha, Alexandru Mitrita and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi are all doubtful, while James Sands is definitely out as he recovers from a broken arm.

Preview

After winning the Supporters’ Shield in an impressive campaign last season, the Metros have struggled for consistency so far this year.

This is neatly demonstrated by a run of two wins, two defeats and a draw over the last five matches - a sequence that has seen them score 12 goals but concede 11.

If nothing else, this combination of prolific attack and fragile defence should ensure a fittingly entertaining derby against Domenec Torrent’s team, which has scored 14 times in the last five MLS games but kept just one clean sheet in six.

Predictions

All in all, odds of 4/5 (1.80) are not to be missed on both teams getting on target in the Red Bulls’ sixth consecutive fixture to produce over 2.5 goals, and a fifth in six for NYCFC.
