The Bafana Bafana legend replaced Eric Tinkler, who is now SuperSport United head coach.
"At times, I feel like I need to tell them to take it down a couple of nods because we are only in pre-season and only four days in,” McCarthy told SABC Sport.
McCarthy has his work cut out in his very first role as head coach following his retirement as a footballer in 2013.
“The boys have acquitted themselves quite nice. They showed me that they are eager to work, and the quality they bring back from the holidays has been really good.
“So I am excited for the league to start already because I want to see them put their quality and work ethic into matches,” McCarthy added.
What’s more pleasing has been the attitude from the players according McCarthy.
“I am enjoying my first couple of days. The boys have been helpful. They have not really given me headaches," he said.
“When you come in as a new manager the players try and suss you out which has been really nice for me because they are a nice bunch. They try to make my job a bit easier,” McCarthy concluded.
