The 2016/2017 Premier Soccer League campaign is turning into one of the most intriguing title races in recent years.
The Citizens have fought tooth and nail throughout the season and currently stand at the top of the PSL table. City went on to further prove their title credentials on Friday, as Eric Tinkler’s troops dispatched Masandawana for the second time this season.
However, Tinkler has downplayed his sides title chances, believing it is too early to make such assertions.
"It's too early to think about who is going to win the title now," Tinkler told Sport24.
"Definitely, we have done extremely well because we have collected 13 points in the last five games.
"I don't think I could have asked for more from our players, but that phase is over now.
City's focus now shifts to their Nedbank Cup encounter on the weekend and the former Orlando Pirates tactician has stressed the importance of keeping the momentum going. Nonetheless, Tinkler believes that despite City being at the PSL summit, Sundowns still have the advantage with their games in hand.
"We are moving on to a Cup game against Acornbush (United) and we want to go through that and go as far as we can in the Nedbank Cup. And then we'll obviously have a tough game against Bloem (Bloemfontein) Celtic away.
"We still want to keep our momentum going and it's vital to win the rest of the games to ensure that we keep tabs with title contenders.
"Yes, Sundowns lost on Friday, but if they win their two games in hand they'll be above us and that's a harsh reality," continued Tinkler.
"So, we have to keep winning if we want to be amongst the title contenders," Tinkler concluded.
