The Lazio attacker's agent, Roberto Calenda, has caused a stir with his contrasting remarks about the 22-year-olds future but Goal breaks down the ongoing saga.
Sky Sport Italia reported that Milan and Lazio have agreed terms for a double deal involving Keita Balde Diao and Lucas Biglia, but the deal has stalled because the Senegalese favours a move to Juventus instead.
Like Biglia, Keita’s contract runs until June 2018 and he has turned down a new deal at the Stadio Olimpico.
Balde’s agent Roberto Calenda admitted that Lazio informed him that a deal with Milan was indeed reached, but reiterated his statement that Biancocelesti did not offer his client a new deal.
"After a few months apart, we met with the president [Claudio Lotito]," he told Sky Sport Italia.
"They communicated to us that they have reached an agreement with Milan, so we realised that he is on the market. Now we will assess our options.
"It's difficult to know what the price is when it comes to Lazio. We talked about many things with Claudio Lotito, but there has never been a concrete offer of a renewal."
The allegations were however quashed by Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare who, via an official club statement, said:
"I take note of the statements by Mr. Roberto Calenda, who says he never received any official offer to renew his client Keita Balde Diao's contract.
"Such statements do not reflect reality. No more than two weeks ago there was yet another meeting with him.
"His client was offered a contract officially last year.
"I want to repeat clearly; the player has been officially offered a contract renewal with the same numbers as Lazio's top players."
The Serie A champions expressed their interest through their general director Giuseppe Marotta who admitted that they were keeping tabs on Keita, who has had by far his most prolific season, scoring 16 goals with six assists in 34 competitive games.
"We are keeping an eye on his situation and are interested, but we are calm," Marotta told Radio Anch'io last month.
"We are always looking for talents who could play alongside our more experienced players."
Keita is believed to prefer a move to Juve rather than Milan, hence why he has not sanctioned to a move to the Rossoneri despite the two sides reaching an agreement.
CalcioMercato claim Balde remains a target for Liverpool this summer due to his reasonable transfer fee. However, The Reds have set their sights on fellow African, Roma’s Egyptian international Mohamed Salah but are struggling to get a deal over the line for the £35 million-rated Salah.
And Keita, a much cheaper option at £26 million, remains their secondary target.
