The goalkeeper feels his side under the Belgian tactician can make their first appearance in next year’s continental showpiece in Cameroon

Gambia goalkeeper Jobe Modou believes his side can earn their first ever qualification under new gaffer Tom Saintfiet for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Scorpions have never attended an Afcon tournament in five previous attempts and this term, suffered a setback in their quest for Cameroon 2019 after a 1-0 loss at Benin last year.

In efforts to keep their hopes alive, the Gambian FA haired the Belgian tactician for a nine-month contract in July and the 45-year-old will make his coaching debut against Algeria on Saturday.

Ahead of the showdown in Bakau, the El Kanemi Warriors goalkeeper is optimistic about coach Saintfiet's ability to make a difference with the Scorpions, beginning against the north Africans.

“Though I did not much about him [Tom Saintfiet] until meeting him in camp,” Modou told Goal.

“Also when I saw his CV, I believe he has a good credential and experience in African football. I believe he can turn things around for the country.  Right now, we are seeing the difference we expected from him which is about tactical discipline.

“He has come with a system that will favour the team because we really want to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time. For now, all the players are happy about his appointment and very eager to give him all the support he needs to succeed.

“The decision of the Gambia FA to hire him was a good idea because that was what we the players think is right. It is a foreign coach of his caliber that can bring back our beautiful game and I am really optimistic that he can lead the Gambia to glory days.”

Gambia are third on Group D log with no point after the first round of matches and will aim to make a winning start under the new gaffer against the Fennecs at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.
