ISL 2017: Atletico de Kolkata sign Mohun Bagan's Debjit Majumder on a multi-year deal

Indian Super League side Atletico de Kolkata left behind the two other footballing giants from the city on Sunday to tie down star goalkeeper Debjit Majumder on a multi-year contract, Goal has learnt.

The 29-year old old shot-stopper, who has been named the best I-League goalkeeper twice in the last three seasons, was chased by both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, but have finally chosen the Red and Whites as his destination for the next few seasons.

Majumder, who had spent early years of his career at Uttarpara Netaji Brigade, Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Kalighat MS, was also part of the Red and Golds' squad for a season before grabbing the headlines for his heroics in Green and Maroon colours.

The Hindmotor born footballer had represented Mumbai City FC in the second season of the high-profile tournament before helping Kolkata for their second title last season. He was also part of the national team camp earlier this summer ahead of the Blue Tigers' encounters against Nepal and Kyrghyzstan.

Debjit, who had made 32 starts in the I-League and ISL combined last season, is the first player to be retained by the Sourav Ganguly co-owned club, who are also interested to tie down one between Pritam Kotal and Prabir Das.

The custodian was hugely popular among the Bagan fans, who gave him the nickname 'savejit', after coming into limelight courtesy a memorable display against arch-rivals East Bengal back in March 2015.

Mohun Bagan have already signed a back-up for Debjit in the form of Soram Poirei but will need further reinforcements in the goalkeeping department before the I-League.

Atletico de Kolkata were not available to make any comment about the signing.
