Sources close to Goal can confirm that Mehtab completed his signing last night at the residence of a top Mohun Bagan official. Both the Kolkata giants were in talks with midfielder but Mehtab opted to join the Mariners.
After spending a year in the Indian Super League (ISL) with new franchise Jamshedpur FC, Hossain is back in Kolkata. He had appeared in 12 matches for Steve Coppell’s side this season and managed to provide one assist.
Initially, he was a regular starter for Jamshedpur but after Wellington Priori joined the club in the January transfer window, Mehtab was relegated to the bench. He also suffered a back injury during the season.
The former India international had spent 10 seasons at East Bengal before leaving the club in 2017 to join the ISL side. During those 10 years, he had won every single trophy in Indian football other than the I-League. He became a household name in East Bengal and was a fan favourite. His decision to go back to Mohun Bagan will come as a great shock for his fans in the East Bengal camp.
Other than Jamshedpur, Mehtab had spent three seasons with Kerala Blasters and had managed to reach the final of the ISL twice.
Mehtab has represented his country 29 times in 10 years from 2005-15 where he scored two goals. He was part of the Nehru Cup-winning India squad in 2012.
